Bakgrunn og erfaring
Devinder Thapa is a Professor at the University of Agder, Norway. He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering in 2008 from Ajou University, South Korea, and completed a second Ph.D. in Information Systems in 2012 from the University of Agder.
His research lies at the intersection of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) and the philosophy of science and technology. It is guided by a central question: how do people experience and make sense of technology in their everyday lives? Drawing on existential and phenomenological perspectives, he approaches technology not only as a tool or system, but as something lived, interpreted, and shaped through human experience. His work also engages with dialogues between Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, particularly in understanding development, meaning, and practice in ICT4D contexts.
Thapa’s academic journey spans Nepal, India, South Korea, Sweden, and Norway, and reflects an interdisciplinary path from industrial engineering to information systems. His research has been published in leading international conferences, including IFIP WG 9.4, IFIP WG 8.2, ICIS, ECIS, AMCIS, PACIS, and HICSS, as well as in journals such as Journal of the Association for Information Systems (JAIS), Information Systems Journal (ISJ), Review of Managerial Science (RMS), International Journal of Information Management (IJIM), Communications of the Association for Information Systems (CAIS), Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries (EJISDC), Information Technology for Development (ITD), and Journal of Information Technology and International Development (ITID), among others.
He currently serves on the editorial boards of ISJ, CAIS, and is an active member of academic communities including AIS, IFIP WG 9.4, SIG GlobDev, and SIGPHIL.
In addition to his academic publications, Thapa is the author of Becoming a Researcher: Dancing with Theory, Practice, and Life, a reflective exploration of the lived experience of becoming a researcher, and INSPIRATION – “प्रेरणा”, a short memoir on personal growth and life lessons. Across both his academic and reflective work, he focuses on lived experience, meaning, and the ongoing process of becoming in research, technology, and life.
