Bakgrunn og erfaring

Bachelor i historie, Master i historie, PhD i historie, undervisningskvalifikasjon for høyere utdanning, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

David Redvaldsen begynte å undervise ved Universitetet i Agder i 2019. Før han ble ansatt ved Institutt for sosiologi og sosialt arbeid hadde han midlertidige stillinger ved Oxford Brookes University (2016-2018), University of Winchester (2017), Morley College (2012-2013), University College London (2011-2012, 2014-2019), Universitetet i Oslo (2009) og Høgskolen i Finnmark (2008-2011).

Redvaldsen er historiker med Storbritannia siden 1815 og Norge siden 1814 som spesialfelt. Hans mastergrad fra University College London var innrettet mot historisk teori, noe som ga ham gode kunnskaper om sosiologiske klassikere. I tillegg studerte han pedagogikk og didaktikk for høyere utdanning ved University College London og Universitetet i Agder.

Han vant Dame Gillian Brown Postgraduate Scholarship fra Anglo-Norse Society i 2003 og, sammen med én annen, Emile Lousse prisen fra International Commission for the History of Representative and Parliamentary Institutions i 2014.

The article investigates immigration restrictions in the United States circa 1880 to 1930. Th e emphasis is on the rhetoric and arguments utilized by supporters of limiting the intake. Aft er 1890, immigrants from southern and eastern Europe grew as a proportion of the total. Th e anticipated resulting demographic change was worrying to traditionalist Americans and to the labour movement. Yet their country had always progressed through arrivals from overseas. How could they formulate mechanisms of exclusion which distinguished between people who were similar to themselves and those who brought something new? Th e racist conservationist Madison Grant drew upon anthropology and history for his contention that Americans were a great fusion of pioneers from northern Europe. Th e historian and journalist Lothrop Stoddard continued this line of reasoning. Both were organized supporters of eugenics, a doctrine used to ‘fi ne-tune’ racist discourses. Eugenics only became a factor in the last two decades of the period. Th e labour movement and others had been clamouring for immigration restrictions long before that, roused to action especially by the arrival of Chinese workers. Th e pamphlet Meat vs. Rice by American Federation of Labor leader Samuel Gompers and Herman Gutstadt, originally published in 1902, applied crude racism to limit competition from such entrants in the job market. Society drew a dividing line between those who could become American and those who could not, buttressed by the Naturalization Law of 1870 and the Chinese Exclusion Acts of 1882 and 1902. Th e negative contentions against immigrants from less familiar places had signifi cant infl uence on the Immigration Act of 1924. Th e article argues that Yankee intellectuals oft en had a conception of America as a British republic, in which related peoples were assimilable and valuable too.

This article investigates to what extent the ideology of the Croix-de-Feu and its successor the Parti Social Français was influenced by biological theories, and especially by eugenics. Like most interwar political movements and parties, they supported natalism. This could have led to additional backing for eugenics, especially as the French version was guided by puericulture or infant care. Puericulture and Lamarckism, according to which acquired traits are thought to be potentially inheritable by offspring, made eugenics in France inclusive, which meant that as primarily a medical ideology it sought to improve the health of the entire population. Only a few French eugenists focused on class or race. Equally, although the Croix-de-Feu and its successor were right-wing associations, they claimed to represent everyone in French society. Despite some overlapping tendencies, eugenics did not much affect the Croix-de-Feu or the Parti Social Français, the only exception being that the physical exercise scheme for youth was based on “positive” eugenics. There are even fewer traces of social Darwinism in their ideology. In regard to ethnic minorities, they supported assimilation rather than biological racism. Racism, however, was more prevalent in the North African branches, where the movement displayed typical fascist traits.

This article reports a local study of the presence of history as a subject in the kindergartens of Kristiansand, a municipality in southern Norway. There is no syllabus for history in the national curriculum; nevertheless, the research sought to find historical content in the kindergartens. The research method was informed by a precept of history didactics, namely that history is everywhere. Using this observation, tentative categories for content likely to feature history were formulated, and then searched for in the individual yearly plans of the kindergartens. This was supplemented by interviews. It is concluded that, in accordance with the national curriculum, history in the kindergartens is a local affair. It emerges especially through local history, visits to museums, and projects with historical features. This research was not designed to determine whether learning outcomes in history are achieved, nor to consider kindergartens outside Kristiansand. However, it references a corpus of literature on history in Norwegian kindergartens, and interacts with it. The conclusion about the presence of the subject is the same as was found for another city, Trondheim, in research by others. For international readers, the article also argues that in principle it is possible for young children to learn history orally and informally.

ABSTRACT This article investigates how the Norwegian Parliament has been treated in history textbooks between 1800 and 2000. It also includes coverage of the medieval assemblies known as ting. Writing national history was affected by the Union with Sweden 1814-1905. In the early nineteenth century, authors often omitted parliamentary history as it had involved conflict with the Swedish king Carl Johan (reigned 1818–44). Over time, the Norwegian Constitutional Assembly and Norwegian Parliament became important topics. In the 1890s, textbooks began presenting recent history from a nationalist point of view. This continued after independence had been achieved in 1905. As the scene of the most important struggles in society, parliament often dominated such narratives. During and after the Second World War, some textbooks included mild criticism of the constitution and parliament. The constitution had not allowed poorer people to vote and parliament had collaborated with the German occupants. Parliamentary history received declining emphasis between 1950 and 2000. This stemmed from more international history and social history being included in curricula. Democratization remained central when considering the nineteenth century, and in the 1990s religious and ethnic minorities began to be included in the narrative of how the constitution had emerged in 1814.
