Christodoulos Christodoulou is a PhD Research Fellow at the Department of Information Systems, University of Agder. His research explores the use of generative AI tools in professional design practice, with a particular interest in how these technologies reshape design expertise, decision-making, creativity, and the role of the designer. His broader academic interests include responsible digitalisation, human–AI collaboration, design research, participatory methods, and the social implications of emerging technologies.

Before joining the University of Agder, Christodoulos completed a Master’s degree in Product Design – Design in Complexity at OsloMet. His master’s thesis examined how graphic design and social media communication can support immigrants in Norway in exercising their right to vote, reflecting his interest in inclusive and socially engaged design. This work has since been developed into research on responsible social media use, civic engagement, and immigrant participation.

Christodoulos also holds a BA in Graphic and Advertising Design from Frederick University Cyprus and a Certificate in Web Design from Alexander College Cyprus. He has several years of professional experience in graphic design, advertising, visual communication, and socially oriented design projects. Alongside his design practice, he has worked as a research assistant on the European-funded Craft Hub project at OsloMet, where he contributed to research communication, quality assurance, and digital publication work. He also served on the local organising committee for the 11th Nordic Design Research Society Conference.

Across his academic and professional work, Christodoulos is interested in how design and technology can be used responsibly to support more inclusive, reflective, and socially meaningful practices.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is increasingly integrated into design practice, yet it remains unclear which designers use these technologies, which tools they adopt, and for what purposes. This scoping review examines empirical research on professional designers’ engagement with GenAI, published between January 2020 and December 2025. Specifically, it analyzes 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers: 20 identified through Scopus and Web of Science, and five through a targeted journal search. The findings reveal considerable diversity and ambiguity in how design professions are defined, reflecting the interdisciplinary and evolving nature of contemporary design practice. Designers working across physical, digital, and service-oriented contexts are represented, often with overlapping disciplinary labels. Publicly available GenAI tools - especially ChatGPT, Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion - predominate and are frequently used across multiple stages of the design process, while only a few studies report custom-built tools. Efficiency emerges as a unifying motivation, with GenAI accelerating workflows, automating repetitive tasks, and enabling rapid iteration. Creative exploration and ideation are also prominent, with GenAI framed as a co-creative partner. This review clarifies the research landscape and highlights gaps for future study.

This reflective case study examines how the responsible use of social media can help raise awareness of electoral participation among immigrants in Norway. Through a structured, four-phase design process, the project combined semi-structured interviews, workshops with political representatives, and design probes as a new method to investigate barriers to participation and to test communication strategies. Findings revealed that the primary challenge was not the lack of information, but rather the ineffective distribution and visibility of existing resources. The project highlights the role of researchers and designers as facilitators of access, emphasising that responsible social media use requires careful attention to who is reached, how messages are interpreted, and what barriers remain. It also emphasises the need for participatory, community-driven approaches and the importance of integrating offline channels to reach diverse audiences. The reflections of the case study offer deeper insights into the ethical and strategic responsibilities of social media design that can be transferable to other cases in civic communication.

In Norway, there has been a consistently low participation rate in local elections among immigrants over the past decade, despite being granted the right to vote. This issue has been documented by the National Statistical Institute of Norway and local news channels such as the National Public Broadcaster (NRK) and Aftenposten. As a graphic designer, my aim is to contribute positively to addressing this issue by educating and persuading voters. For my master’s thesis, I developed a product - an advertising campaign - that aims to encourage immigrants in Norway to participate in local elections. The campaign includes various channels such as static and animated posters, billboards, newspapers, magazines, and online advertisements. It also offers educational materials such as leaflets, how-to videos, and social media promotional items, including posts, stories, reels, carousels, etc. Additionally, there are video commercials, information booths, and installations. My objective is to educate and convince voters from diverse backgrounds to exercise their right to vote. To frame my campaign, I divided my project into four phases. In phase one, I interviewed immigrants to gain insights into their awareness and perspectives on the Norwegian electoral system. In phase two, I collaborated with Likestillingssenteret (The Centre for Equality) to organise a workshop, share the insights from phase one with local representatives, and gather their feedback. In phase three, I developed the campaign based on the objectives defined by the earlier collected data. In phase four, I tested the efficiency and alignment of the campaign with the objectives by presenting the media to some immigrants from phase one. I also reviewed whether the new material was helpful and informative to them. Findings from phase four indicate that the designed campaign is highly relevant and effective in educating and motivating immigrants, and encouraging them to learn more about local elections. In closing this thesis, I make some recommendations on how the campaign can be improved before actual implementation. Furthermore, I conclude with some reflective thoughts on how my involvement in this project has helped me develop my knowledge, skills, and competence.
