Ansvarsområde

Jeg har studert sosialantropologi ved Universitetet i Oslo (Hovedfag fra 2004, og PhD fra 2011), og har gjort etnografisk forskning i Peru (Andes-regionen) i mange år. Nå underviser jeg i ulike emner relatert til utviklingsspørsmål og Latin Amerika ved UiA, i tillegg til å forske og skrive om hvordan mennesker påvirkes av og responderer på krise og ulikhet.

Forskning

Mine forskningsinteresser omfatter uformell rural-urban økonomi, prekære arbeidsforhold og entreprenørskap, sosial endring, kjønn og hushold, krise, ulikhet og fattigdom, samt menneske-natur relasjoner i Sør-Amerika, først og fremst i det peruanske Andes. Jeg har også forsket på klimaendring og vannforvaltning i Peru.

This chapter discusses the production of social inequalities in the Majes Irrigation Project (MIP) in southern Peru in terms of class, race and gender. More than 30 years after the construction of MIP, and after radical neoliberal structural adjustments in the 1990s, many of the first settlers have lost their farms or are struggling with debt. Nevertheless, Majes is known as a ‘place of opportunities’, and thousands of people have migrated from the poor rural highlands in search of work or informal business, settling in the desert surrounding the irrigated areas. The population in Majes comes from different places, with various cultural, educational and economic backgrounds. The chapter examines how Majes has been generated through relations of capital and labour and how families experience debt and uncertainty, and yet continue struggling to get ahead in a precarious informal economy. The chapter argues that inequality is embedded in the historical intersectionality of class formations, gender and conceptions of race and that these differences have not diminished with various attempts of social reform. On the contrary, social inequality has increased during the past three decades of neoliberalism, with more insecure conditions for farming and work.

In the first decade of the 21st century, a new niche opened up in the street economy of Cusco, a city in the Southern Peruvian Andes: the sale of calls between mobile phones. This article shows that the neoliberal policies of deregulation that enabled the mobile phone call business have also produced new regulatory spaces that small-scale entrepreneurs have to manage in their relationships to the authorities. Through the story of a family business, Stensrud discusses the relationships between precariousness, informality, uncertainty and ambiguity, and focuses on the tensions that arise in kinship relationships that are affective and supportive, yet also exploitative. The main argument is that there are different modes of precarity, and that kinship, which mostly has been thought of as security in an uncertain world, in fact can exacerbate a precarious condition.
