The chapter addresses how ethical issues arise within qualitative research. This is not about issues sorted out at the outset to be filled into bureaucratic forms, but about emergent ethical dilemmas and difficult issues we must unpick different from images in the dominant "audit culture". By drawing on interview- and ethnographic research the author illustrates the complexity involved in researcher- researchered relationships and moral responsibility in qualitative research

To do minor activist research is to make use of prompts and displacements to mark and produce new subjectivities, spatialities, and temporalities. To do minor activist research is to unsettle received discourses, narratives, and material social practices of power to develop means of resistance in new and different registers. Training the imagination for a collaboratively accomplished re/presentation of data through creating points of encounters,
engendering affirmative perspectivists ethos. Re/presenting data as a space in which own thinking is challenged providing a perspective of the storying practices across participants and across different disciplinary, ideological, or personal boundaries within the researcher´s and the researched specific positioning. It requires getting everyone to participate in the ‘analysis’ of data and then getting everyone ‘inside’ the text: situating data-inquiries in immanence. It therefore demands a liberation from old scripts, and challenges how everyone is transformed into text. A perspectivist ethos being simultaneously means and objective for avoiding reproduction of both old scripts and ethics.

This chapter offers definitions of some classic terms in research ethics such as informed consent, confidentiality and trust. However, the social context of research makes these issues more complex in qualitative research. The chapter illustrates such conumdrums of research ethics including in cross-cultural contexts.

This article is a methodological discussion, in which I argue that to study complex phenomena such as culture and femicide calls for approaches other than the dominant interview and survey studies. By their focus on the contextual, the interactional and the process itself, and by rejecting language as referential and transparent, ethno-informed approaches better recognize and capture this complexity. This is particularly relevant in cross-cultural studies, in which we can no longer assume that members share such common-sense thinking. This makes activities such as asking questions and filling answers into categories problematic. We need to see how a phenomenon such as femicide, telling stories about it and our representations reflect the diversity of cultural forms. I will draw on secondary data to illustrate my arguments and their relevance.

This project aims to unwrap some of the complexities related to female beauty and the body. It reflects
on the second wave radical feminist view that beautifying the female body serves to attract male
approval via the male gaze, both of which are deeply entrenched in patriarchal power. This perspective positions cosmetic surgery as a disempowering act for women. In riposte, we turn to third
wave liberal feminist ideas to engage with the narratives of ten participants who tell of their personal
experiences of, and motivations for, undergoing a cosmetic intervention. We undertake an in-depth
exploration of these lifeworld experiences and the interplay of subjectivity and intersubjectivity in
the women’s encounters. Findings suggest that a cosmetic intervention is often obtained for the self
as opposed to satisfying the “other.” Importantly, cosmetic interventions allow a process to occur
in which an individual’s physical body becomes better aligned to her sense of self. From this liberal
feminist perspective, cosmetic surgery is positioned as an empowering act.

Cosmetic surgery is often linked to the perception that women who resort to cosmetic interventions
to alter their physical appearance are vain, superficial, and narcissistic. Few investigations have acknowledged and explored the individual’s personal motivations and experiences of her action and
choice with regards to aesthetic surgery. By focusing on subjective experience, alternative insights
can be gained on the cosmetic procedure(s) and on how their reshaped body influences an individual’s lifeworld experience. The article explores the perceived benefits and consequences of reshaping,
enhancing, and/or reducing a perceived flaw or shortcoming of the body. From this exploration the
focus moves to the individual’s subjective and intersubjective perceptions: how she motivates and
justifies her physical transformation whilst keeping private, and at times hiding, her surgical intervention. Drawing on narratives from several women, we attempt to understand how they experience
cosmetic surgery in terms of their personal sense of self and their everyday social reality.

HIV remains a threat to the ordinary everyday life of older woman in African society. In what can be called “a reality shock,” HIV challenges most of the ordinary everyday endeavors in conservative African societies as it imposes new Western prevention, treatment, and health-management methods over long-held African traditions. The reality of the “Western” HIV epidemic, and its impact on the “African” ordinary everyday life, demands that the infected undergo a paradigm shift in order for them to live harmoniously within their society. This calls for a re-examination of traditional values and a strong sense of responsibility, courage, and determination to remain relevant and not be considered odd in one’s community, especially as one grows old with the virus. The study, which focuses on the experiences of women from the Manicaland Province in Zimbabwe who are aging with HIV, observes that growing old with an HIV infection fosters forms of inner strength and wisdom that enable the infected to disregard some of the unquestioned traditions and employ effective ways of living well with the life-threatening condition.

Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (ICQI) 2015 to honor 43 disappeared
students from Mexico. This special panel was called
upon by César A. Cisneros Puebla to gather reflections during
a period of 6 months about the Ayotzinapa massacre. Beginning
in the first days of November 2014, an exchange of information
and messages began among the colleagues whose
reflections are displayed here and others who could not participate
for diverse reasons. On Friday May 22, 2015, at 8:00 a.m.,
these 27 interventions were performed in room Union 314 A of
the Illini Union Building at University of Illinois in Urbana–
Champaign. Interrogation into a new critical qualitative inquiry
provided the backdrop for this exercise of collective participation,
one where these qualitative researchers shared their intimate
thoughts, feelings, and imagination based on what they
had read, watched, and discussed about the news on such
a senseless human tragedy. On September 26, 2014, 43
Ayotzinapa teacher education students disappeared in Mexico’s
southern state of Guerrero and a very sensitive combat for
political and social transformation began.

Abstract: In recent years, “indigenous research” and “indigenous methods” have become prominent themes in the general field of qualitative methodology. These ideas and their implications raise serious questions for the wider conduct of social research. We will outline some of those ideas, subjecting them to scrutiny, and ultimately using them to question the rise of Romanticism in contemporary social methodology. We develop these ideas to question the contemporary emphasis on the personal and the experiential in current methodological commentary.

This chapter consists of two main, closely related sections. The first is a review of the new research ethics regime situated within the present transformation of universities. The second section illustrates how this in different ways interferes with qualitative interviewing and constructionist aproaches to explore reality-constituting practices. The risk of hampering knowledge production is inextricibly interwoven with disregarding the intersection of research ethics, epistemology, and methods. I draw on data from my ethnographic research to illustrate my arguments.

Qualitative Research and Research Ethics: Cleaner than life?

My talk/paper deals with the contemporary tendency to transform qualitative research into an audit model to fit the neoliberal organizational ideal of institutional control and discipline. Despite transatlantic variation the regulatory net has been thrown rather wide. On the practical side research has come to deal with the tedious work of filling in bureaucratic forms. More serious is how this regime interferes with knowledge production as the very pursuit of research. The governance of research ethics has itself become an active participant in constituting qualitative research as a vulnerable field which again provides ethical enthusiasts with their legitimate authority to intervene. Despite appreciation of ethical research, the new ethics regime thus complicates social research and introduces new risks. I will draw on my ethnographic work on Asian business in East-Africa to illustrate the intersection of research ethics and epistemology, the call for contextual reflections and the inherent trap in globalization of research.

Internationalization of research: Where does Indigenous methodology take us?
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
Since the turn of the century the “new” Indigenous methodology (IM) has entered the qualitative research arena as a celebrated new way to make up for Europeanism and the legacy of western colonial injustice. This rather new tradition is informed by a critical and feminist epistemology, and aims at social transformation through action and political activity. By seeing knowledge as grounded in experience IM challenges the ideal knower as being portrayed in the criticism of Western universalism and the discussion of the silenced subaltern. To speak not from just an experience, but from my experience, becomes the site and ground from which to speak as Indigenous and to explore ways out of the connection between Indigeneity and marginalization. Despite a need to combat global injustice, I argue that IM feeds on romanticism, sentimental pessimism and the historyless character of indigenous cultures, all vital in the IM narrative of the colonial past which produces victims in need of sympathy. This makes critical voices into a moral rather than a methodological issue which works to uphold the line between insiders and outsiders of the indigenous political movement. The problem then is that methodological questions have become subordinate to ideological and political requirements.

My life is part of it: Articulating the silenced work of female ethnographers.
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv

This paper discusses the complexities and quandaries of ethnographic work when aiming at understanding networks and reciprocity in the South. As always, if we are to understand such relationships from within, there is a need, as researchers, also to get involved and to participate in them. Thus, this paper focuses on the level of involvement and the personal implications of this approach. For decades ethnographers have discussed, worried about as well as indulged into, the interactional issues in the field. However, they have also tended not to articulate how the ethnographers` personal life may co-shape the conduct of research as well as the text. From a feminist perspective we claim that getting immersed also implies challenging the boundaries between the western conception of the private and the public of ethnographic work as reflected in the discussion of contemporary codes of field conduct. We claim that resistances and invitations present stories about the organizations and com
munities themselves. Drawing on our cross-cultural ethnographic experiences, we argue that ethnographers should articulate these stories as they expose values and interests of the actors, both ties and conflicts. Our focus is with the first phase when entering the field. We draw on data from our respective projects,- our ways into a small-scale female network for income-generation in Zanzibar Town, the entry into a larger male Asian business network in East-Africa, and third, the entrance into networks and relationships in a Mozambican village context.

All aricles have undergone a thorough review process and only the best were accepted. The articles emply different qualitative methods and analytic strategies and thus invite us to see what might otherwise have been hidden. They all illustrate well the potential of QM to describe and grasp social reality. The Issue also offers two book reviews.

This is Panel II`s evaluation report of the Lund University (LU) Faculty of Social Sciences departments listed above. All panel members were external professors - from US, UK, UK/IT, DK and SW. LU organised the evaluation as a process with close dialogue between the external panels and the departments via documents and zoom meetings. Departments also commented on the panel reports prior to publication. This report is part of a wider evaluation of Lund University. The focus of the assessment is on the preconditions for research quality rather than of research quality, and it has a long-term future-orient approach where activities are assessed in a mutidimensional manner. The very aim is to secure Lund University`s position in the global research system.
All reports are published in this book: https://portal.research.lu.se/portal/en/publications/rq20--lund-universitys-research-quality-evaluation-2020(b4d910c4-860b-4bb0-8c7b-9d823c1a4bb4).html,
