  This paper investigates the prevalence of climate skepticism among 3rd year engineering students and seeks to understand how pedagogical interventions can be used to challenge climate skeptic views. This contribution follows a two-pronged approach to estimate the proportion of climate skeptic attitudes in the classroom, understand their root cause and, most importantly, develop pedagogical tools to challenge such views. The first part involved conducting two statement-based surveys to identify the prevalence of climate skepticism before and after pedagogical interventions. The second part discusses the effect of the use of interactive pedagogical methods to challenge climate skepticism and reduce potential conflict in the classroom. The goal of this research is to determine which pedagogical methods can contribute to changing attitudes towards climate skepticism among engineering students. Two surveys were given to 275 engineering students before and after several hours of lectures on sustainability theory and an interactive class exercise to challenge climate skeptical views. The results of the surveys showed that climate skepticism among our group of engineering students was higher than the Norwegian population average and that the chosen pedagogical intervention showed mixed results in changing these attitudes. The results of the study can be used to understand how engineers perceive the challenge of climate change and to what extent engineering students are skeptical of climate change science. The results will also be useful for educators in understanding how topics of climate change can be effectively taught and how climate skepticism can be dealt with in the classroom through effective pedagogical methods.

  In modern “knowledge societies” (Stehr 1994), knowledge is increasingly depicted as essential for economic growth and social and political inclusion. Consequentially, training and research facilities such as schools and universities become crucial determinants for a society’s ability to remain competitive and develop knowledge-based and knowledge-driven economies. Likewise, more recent research has identified knowledge as an essential driving force of development while pointing out that low-income countries in the Global South, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, struggle to put their domestic universities in a position to contribute to national development (Kruss et al. 2012). This apparent failure of transferring knowledge from the laboratories, academic hallways, and lecture theatres to broader society cannot be reduced to a lack of resources but often indicates a more general mismatch between academia and society (Kruss et al. 2012, 523–24), a lack of interaction or understanding between scientific and non-scientific communities.

  Political and scholarly debate about welfare state reform increasingly acknowledge the need to align social and environmental policies and sustainable welfare state reform. Against the background of urgent environmental problems such as anthropogenic climate change, welfare states must turn green. However, this sheer necessity underpinned by increasingly dire warnings by climate scientists demanding large-scale social transformation not only run the risk of concealing the normative convictions that drive transformative policy agendas and limit the opportunity for legitimate opposition and disagreement but to underestimate negative redistributive effects of green welfare state reform. This article discusses implications of social welfare policy debates against the background of urgent climate change. It argues that tendencies to frame social policy reform as inevitable adjustment has serious implications for the ability to voice dissent. Analogous to discussions about a «Third Way» for the welfare state in the 1990s, the emphasize on functional reforms conceals normative convictions and can thus affect the demarcation criteria between «deserving» and «undeserving» recipients of social support and the shift to a focus on individual (lack of) responsibility.

  Despite widespread acknowledgement of the value of sustainability, the transition towards more sustainable economies and societies remains a challenge around the world. Civil societies play an important role not only in supporting government efforts on sustainability by ‘filling gaps’ and raising social awareness, but also in pioneering new practices and disrupting particular governmental or corporate strategies, as well as engaging and empowering previously marginalised individuals and groups. Yet civil society is not always a champion of sustainability nor of democracy; these actors may of course also destabilise innovations, depoliticise sustainability issues by reifying certain concepts or approaches and reinforce social hierarchies and patterns of exclusion that can undermine any transformative potential and bolster the unsustainable status quo. This Special Issue is therefore dedicated to interrogating what we see as the ambiguous, yet critical, role played by civil societies in sustainability politics. This introductory paper intends not only to draw attention to some of the arguments, theories and challenges found in each of the individual papers collected here, but also to pull on the common threads that run through them, as well as to unpick some of the different uses of the key terminology that they employ. We aim, moreover, to highlight the inevitable tension between the ‘democratic side’ and the ‘dark side’ of civil society and its politics of sustainability.

  À l’aide d’une approche réseau, cet article vise à illustrer le rôle central joué par un nouveau think tank dans l’essor tardif du réseau climatosceptique en Allemagne depuis les années 2010. Comme le démontrent les résultats de l’analyse, l’Institut européen pour le climat et l’énergie (EIKE) a su relier différents acteurs allemands, de la droite néolibérale à l’extrême droite populiste, dans une communauté poursuivant le but commun de promouvoir une contre-expertise climatique. L’analyse réseau produite illustre également le rôle de courtier qu’a joué l’EIKE dans le transfert d’idées et de stratégies de communication entre la communauté climatosceptique allemande et les principaux think tanks néolibéraux et néoconservateurs américains.

  Radio and television broadcasters accuse climate scientists of “promoting a global warming hoax”, recommending that they be “named and fi red, drawn and quartered” (Rush Limbaugh); commit “hara kiri” (Glenn Beck); and be “publicly fl ogged” (Mark Morano). Conservative media are crucial in promoting climate skepticism. Likewise, climate skepticism resonates well with white middle-class men. But why does the middle class continue to support “radical” positions? This article focuses on Anti-Intellectualism to explain why climate skeptic rhetoric resonates with “Middle American Radicals” (MARS).

  Socio-economic inequality is associated with differentiated levels of health and poor health affects political participation; inequalities are embodied in political life. This contribution, focusing on South Africa, attends to the impact of exposure to environmental hazards and stigmatisation of unhealthy bodies on political participation. The corporealisation of a healthy democratic politics demands not (only) the inclusion of different bodies, but opportunities to radically contest the prevailing socio-political institutions, economic mechanisms and disciplinary norms that make some bodies healthier than others.

  With the issue of climate now on the political centre stage, parties across the spectrum can no longer afford to ignore it and must position themselves, the far right included. Looking to Germany, Austria and Italy, researchers Amanda Machin and Alexander Ruser bust the myth that far-right parties across Europe share a stance of climate denialism and examine the rise of ‘climate nationalism’, asking what the far right’s surge in the 2019 European elections might mean for climate politics. Studying the positions of far-right parties on climate, they argue, helps us to move beyond a technocratic framing to put the politics back into the discussion.
