Pomegranate

Pomegranate: Punicum granatum.

granateple

The fruit of the pomegranate tree is reddish-yellow and apple-like in appearance. The edible part is inside the pomegranate and consists of many small seeds surrounded by juicy, purplish-red arils.

There are many different varieties of pomegranate. Pomegranates are sensitive to frost and cannot survive the Norwegian winter outdoors. The tree is therefore grown in well-drained pots that are brought indoors for the winter.

Pomegranates have been known since ancient times and are associated in mythology with fertility and wealth.

The pomegranate is native to a large area stretching from Iran to northern India.
