Be prepared, with a visit to the Survival Garden

In an increasingly tumultuous world, the words "survival" and "preparedness" has become ever more prevalent. In our new exhibition "The survival garden", you can gain valuable knowledge about utilising your own green spaces, large or small, to grow food in uncertain times.

In the Survival Garden you find information about the whole growing process, including how to harvest and store seeds for the next season. Even in cities, utilising vertical farming, or a small garden patch can be valuable spaces to grow produce for you and yours, should food security decline for some reason. During the first world war, one of Norway’s most visited parks was actually turned in to a potato pasture.

Soil type is an important factor for plants to grow well. Plants need a combination of nutrients, space for their roots, and water to produce a good harvest. In the exhibition you’ll get the opportunity to both learn about different soil types, as well as explore them with your hands! Composting is a good tool to create your own nutrient rich soil. In our survival garden you’ll get handy tips on how this process works, so that you’re more likely to succeed on your own.

Plants aren’t all that different to humans, in that they have different preferences in living conditions. You might not have heard about «hardiness zones» before, but it is an important concept to know, to ensure plants grow in optimal temperature and light conditions. In the survival garden you’ll find examples of plants you might be surprised to discover can survive in Norway all year round.

So welcome to NBH’s Survival Garden. We hope it’ll inspire you to start your very own or grown something you’ve never tried before!
