  This paper is divided into a surveying and argumentative part and a slightly longer documentary part, which is meant to verify or at least make more plausible claims made in the first part. The first part deals in broad outline with the relationship of Frank and von Mises to the Vienna Circle of Logical Empiricism on the one hand and to the physicists and mathematicians in the German-speaking world on the other. The varying special positions, partly the non-conformity of the two Austrian scientists are emphasized, in particular, their adherence to Ernst Mach’s epistemology and their shared interest in probability theory and applied mathematics. The impact of emigration and the after-effects in the U.S. are discussed. This leads to new insights into the fine structure of the Vienna Circle and the latter’s relationship to German academia within ‘Weimar Culture’. P. Forman’s interpretation (1971) of von Mises’ position is critically discussed. The second, documentary part, uses recently discovered correspondence between Frank and von Mises, and, to a lesser extent, von Mises’ personal diary. It aims at further substantiating some of the introductory theses and will at the same time provide material for a thorough biographical appreciation of the two scholars and friends.

  The paper is based on a hitherto unexplored document (audiotape of an interview accompanied by a German transcript) from 1953, located in the Freud Papers at the Library of Congress. It contributes to a better understanding of the impact of Freud and of Psychoanalysis on personalities from the exact sciences, here represented by the noted applied mathematicians Richard von Mises and Hilda Geiringer from Vienna. The detailed discussion of the interview sheds some new light on the different roles of Kraus and Freud in the Vienna culture, on the Vienna Jugendkulturbewegung (youth culture movement) during WWI in which Geiringer was involved, on Freud’s and Siegfried Bernfeld’s standing around 1930 among German philosophers and psychologists, and on Wilhelm Fließ’ theory of periodicity, which von Mises—based on his attitude as an applied mathematician—defended against superficial accusations. Finally, new biographical material is provided for von Mises and the remotely related Freud family, and for Geiringer’s and von Mises’ early lives. The interview, which was taken during the Cold War, also allows conclusions as to how politics influenced the memories and views of the participants. Part of the aim of the paper is historical documentation of unknown material (letters by Karl Kraus and Wolfgang Köhler, one book review by Wilhelm Ostwald, a file on R. Pfennig), including some correction of erroneous information in the literature.

  Abstract This chapter is about the famous German-Austrian applied mathematician Richard von Mises (1883–1953) and his school in Berlin in the 1920s. The paper focuses on his interactions and controversies with mathematicians at the Technische Hochschule (Higher Technical College) in Berlin, in particular Georg Hamel and Rudolf Rothe, who claimed priority for their institution in the training of applied mathematicians. Von Mises emphasized the special place and characteristics of his Institute for Applied mathematics at the classical University of Berlin between pure mathematics, engineering, and industry. In the appendix of the paper the main stipulations of the “Mathematical practical course (Praktikum)” of von Mises’ institute are reproduced. The paper also draws some comparison and describes some competition between the Göttingen and the Berlin schools of applied mathematics discussing a controversial quote by A. Ostrowski (1966) which describes the Berlin school of applied mathematics as “the first mathematically serious.”

  This paper investigates scientific, institutional, and political conflict and collaboration between two different disciplines in the first part of the 20th century: applied mathematics and fluid dynamics. It argues for the catalytic role of Richard von Mises (1883–1953) in this process and analyzes the reasons for von Mises’s considerable fame in the former and limited posthumous reputation in the latter field. I argue that von Mises’s contributions to fluid dynamics and aerodynamics suffered chiefly from two somewhat interconnected deficiencies compared to the work of his principal competitors. There was, on the one hand, von Mises’s methodological preference for applied mathematics as opposed to the reigning hybrid theories of fluid dynamics, which were usually more prone to ad hoc adaptation of theory to experimental data. There was, on the other hand, von Mises’s geographical remoteness from the main experimental facilities of fluid dynamics and the data produced there. Additionally, there were external reasons that limited von Mises’s influence, among them his fate as a refugee from Nazi Germany. Despite his occasionally polemical mind, von Mises’s work as a bridge builder prevailed, as evidenced by the success of his journal ZAMM. Indisputably, von Mises was a rare example of an engineer and a mathematician combined.

  Johannes Lohne (1908-1993) arbeidet som fysikk- og matematikklærer, først i Odda og etter krigen i sin fødeby Flekkefjord. Selv om han ikke hadde doktorgrad, ble han en av sin tids mest betydelige vitenskapshistorikere. Hans forskning bidro for eksempel til at den engelske matematikeren og fysikeren Thomas Harriot nå ofte blir betegnet som «Englands Galileo». Denne boken beskriver Lohnes liv og en del av hans forskningsresultater, som åpner nye perspektiver på noen av det 17. århundres store vitenskapsmenn som Harriot, Kepler, Hooke og Newton. I tillegg går boken inn på spørsmålet om i hvilken grad Lohnes virksomhet som forsker i etterkrigstiden, og hans ettermæle i våre dager, ble påvirket av hans innsats som frontkjemper under krigen og av domfellelsen i landssvikoppgjøret og fengselsoppholdet fra 1945 til 1948.
