  This paper describes the failed attempts of the founder of modern set-theoretical topology, Felix Hausdorff, to save his life from the anti-Semitic Nazi threat by emigration to the United States in 1939. Although he was still mathematically productive, Hausdorff’s advanced age was his undoing, making him less attractive to the Americans. The paper is a translation of the 2021 German original [Mitt. Dtsch. Math.-Ver. 29 (2021), 132–136].

  Using the example of an Austrian engineer and mathematician, Richard von Mises, the article documents the diversity of the lines of influence of Klein’s spirit on mature “distance learning students,” in particular on those who contributed to Klein’s Encyklopädie. Klein also had an indirect effect on von Mises through established mathematicians such as Georg Hamel and Karl Heun, and through his seminar. Although von Mises was unable to attend the latter, he was undoubtedly aware of its content through his contacts in Göttingen and through publications. Later von Mises worked increasingly on numerical and graphical methods in applications. These methods were less represented in Klein’s seminars but were developed by Carl Runge who was strongly supported by Klein. As head of the Berlin Institute for Applied Mathematics in the 1920s, von Mises ultimately regarded himself as the true heir to Klein, which included some sentiment of German-Austrian solidarity after the defeat in the war. New sources in this article are primarily correspondence between von Mises and his mother, with Klein, and with Heun.

  Late in 1902 and early in 1903 Elizabeth Stephansen, the first female Norwegian Ph.D. in mathematics (1902), wrote two letters from Göttingen to her colleague and compatriot Carl Størmer. The letters can be partly read as a reaction to some criticism which Størmer had made of the mathematical atmosphere in Göttingen before he left in December 1902 after a stay of only two months. The letters are discussed in this paper and published in the appendix in their entirety both in original Norwegian and in English translation. The article provides an insight into some aspirations and social conditions in Scandinavian, in particular Norwegian, mathematics at the beginning of the twentieth century. It also helps to broaden and deepen the historical discussion of mathematics in Göttingen around the turn of the twentieth century.

  The paper is based on a hitherto unexplored document (audiotape of an interview accompanied by a German transcript) from 1953, located in the Freud Papers at the Library of Congress. It contributes to a better understanding of the impact of Freud and of Psychoanalysis on personalities from the exact sciences, here represented by the noted applied mathematicians Richard von Mises and Hilda Geiringer from Vienna. The detailed discussion of the interview sheds some new light on the different roles of Kraus and Freud in the Vienna culture, on the Vienna Jugendkulturbewegung (youth culture movement) during WWI in which Geiringer was involved, on Freud’s and Siegfried Bernfeld’s standing around 1930 among German philosophers and psychologists, and on Wilhelm Fließ’ theory of periodicity, which von Mises—based on his attitude as an applied mathematician—defended against superficial accusations. Finally, new biographical material is provided for von Mises and the remotely related Freud family, and for Geiringer’s and von Mises’ early lives. The interview, which was taken during the Cold War, also allows conclusions as to how politics influenced the memories and views of the participants. Part of the aim of the paper is historical documentation of unknown material (letters by Karl Kraus and Wolfgang Köhler, one book review by Wilhelm Ostwald, a file on R. Pfennig), including some correction of erroneous information in the literature.

  This paper is divided into a surveying and argumentative part and a slightly longer documentary part, which is meant to verify or at least make more plausible claims made in the first part. The first part deals in broad outline with the relationship of Frank and von Mises to the Vienna Circle of Logical Empiricism on the one hand and to the physicists and mathematicians in the German-speaking world on the other. The varying special positions, partly the non-conformity of the two Austrian scientists are emphasized, in particular, their adherence to Ernst Mach’s epistemology and their shared interest in probability theory and applied mathematics. The impact of emigration and the after-effects in the U.S. are discussed. This leads to new insights into the fine structure of the Vienna Circle and the latter’s relationship to German academia within ‘Weimar Culture’. P. Forman’s interpretation (1971) of von Mises’ position is critically discussed. The second, documentary part, uses recently discovered correspondence between Frank and von Mises, and, to a lesser extent, von Mises’ personal diary. It aims at further substantiating some of the introductory theses and will at the same time provide material for a thorough biographical appreciation of the two scholars and friends.

  In Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya’s memoirs there is a rather ambiguous story about how she came to understand trigonometric functions on her own as a teenager by reading the chapter on optics in Tyrtov’s elementary physics textbook. Furthermore, she claims that in so doing, she happened to follow ‘the same road that had been taken historically: that is, instead of a sine I used a chord’. We examine Tyrtov’s textbook in search of sources for such inspiration and quote hitherto unknown critical reactions to her autobiographical reflections by Kovalevskaya’s teacher I I Malevich. We conclude that Kovalevskaya’s memoirs may well be marred by personal interests and/or faltering memory. By adding new sources about Kovalevskaya’s early mathematical education and by critiquing some previously published reactions to the sine anecdote, we hope to contribute some nuances to the biographical literature on this world-famous pioneering female professor of mathematics.

  Abstract This chapter is about the famous German-Austrian applied mathematician Richard von Mises (1883–1953) and his school in Berlin in the 1920s. The paper focuses on his interactions and controversies with mathematicians at the Technische Hochschule (Higher Technical College) in Berlin, in particular Georg Hamel and Rudolf Rothe, who claimed priority for their institution in the training of applied mathematicians. Von Mises emphasized the special place and characteristics of his Institute for Applied mathematics at the classical University of Berlin between pure mathematics, engineering, and industry. In the appendix of the paper the main stipulations of the “Mathematical practical course (Praktikum)” of von Mises’ institute are reproduced. The paper also draws some comparison and describes some competition between the Göttingen and the Berlin schools of applied mathematics discussing a controversial quote by A. Ostrowski (1966) which describes the Berlin school of applied mathematics as “the first mathematically serious.”

  This paper investigates scientific, institutional, and political conflict and collaboration between two different disciplines in the first part of the 20th century: applied mathematics and fluid dynamics. It argues for the catalytic role of Richard von Mises (1883–1953) in this process and analyzes the reasons for von Mises’s considerable fame in the former and limited posthumous reputation in the latter field. I argue that von Mises’s contributions to fluid dynamics and aerodynamics suffered chiefly from two somewhat interconnected deficiencies compared to the work of his principal competitors. There was, on the one hand, von Mises’s methodological preference for applied mathematics as opposed to the reigning hybrid theories of fluid dynamics, which were usually more prone to ad hoc adaptation of theory to experimental data. There was, on the other hand, von Mises’s geographical remoteness from the main experimental facilities of fluid dynamics and the data produced there. Additionally, there were external reasons that limited von Mises’s influence, among them his fate as a refugee from Nazi Germany. Despite his occasionally polemical mind, von Mises’s work as a bridge builder prevailed, as evidenced by the success of his journal ZAMM. Indisputably, von Mises was a rare example of an engineer and a mathematician combined.

  Johannes Lohne (1908-1993) arbeidet som fysikk- og matematikklærer, først i Odda og etter krigen i sin fødeby Flekkefjord. Selv om han ikke hadde doktorgrad, ble han en av sin tids mest betydelige vitenskapshistorikere. Hans forskning bidro for eksempel til at den engelske matematikeren og fysikeren Thomas Harriot nå ofte blir betegnet som «Englands Galileo». Denne boken beskriver Lohnes liv og en del av hans forskningsresultater, som åpner nye perspektiver på noen av det 17. århundres store vitenskapsmenn som Harriot, Kepler, Hooke og Newton. I tillegg går boken inn på spørsmålet om i hvilken grad Lohnes virksomhet som forsker i etterkrigstiden, og hans ettermæle i våre dager, ble påvirket av hans innsats som frontkjemper under krigen og av domfellelsen i landssvikoppgjøret og fengselsoppholdet fra 1945 til 1948.

  The talks aims at giving a global and necessarily provisional view of a variety of definitory, methodical, and cognitive questions connected to the ups and downs in the attention to and appreciation of applied mathematics during its history. Sociological, political and ideological factors will be discussed as well as changes in disciplinary delimitations between mathematics, fields of applications such as astronomy, physics, engineering, biology and economics, hybrid disciplines such as aerodynamics, stochastics and information technologies. Special attention will be given to historical changes in the triangle of numerical, geometrical and instrumental methods and to modeling in applied mathematics. The role of persons for the rise of applied mathematics from about 1900 will be illuminated in overview for key figures such as Klein, Pearson, Runge, Borel, Mises, Kármán, Lefschetz, and Wiener. New requirements since the advent of personal computers and information technologies from the 1980s will be tentatively discussed. A view of crucial literature plus desiderata and lacunae will be given.

  In his 2009 book, the author focused on 145 German-educated among the approximately 200 émigré mathematicians from German occupied territories between 1933 and 1945. About three fourths of them ended up in the United States. 37 among the 145, or about one fourth, have been counted in the book as going first to the United Kingdom with about half of them proceeding to other countries (above all the U.S.) before the war. The 20 mathematicians who stayed in the UK were: H. Caemmerer, H. Hamburger, H.O. Hirschfeld (Hartley), W. Hauser, H. Heilbronn, G. Hermann, K. Hirsch, B. Kaufmann, H. and K. Kober, W. Ledermann, K. Mahler, A. Mayer, B. Neumann, A. Prag, R. Rado, W. Rogosinsky, O. Taussky, S. Vajda, A. Winternitz. After a more general introduction the talk focuses on the UK. Among the problems which affected successful immigration were: The high percentage of algebraists to be assimilated, the low percentage of applied mathematicians who came to the UK and stayed there, the differences in the educational systems between the UK and Germany, academic anti-Semitism and the priority of jobs for young British mathematicians, the internments (Isle of Man) and of war research from 1939.

  Argument In the decade between 1983 and 1993, Herbert Mehrtens in West Berlin and I in East Berlin communicated closely about our parallel work on mathematics under the National Socialist (NS) regime. For a short period (1988–89), we worked on a joint book on this topic. We agreed that the book should be based primarily on empirical historical material, using a theoretical approach largely guided by Mehrtens’ work on social systems in mathematics (Mehrtens1981, 1987a). However, parallel work for his habilitation thesis on modernity in mathematics increasingly captivated Mehrtens’ interests. This, together with ongoing resistance among older mathematicians and the insecurities of our individual careers during times of considerable political change, particularly in East Germany, led to the failure of our joint project. This paper aims at reconstructing—mostly by drawing on correspondence—parts of the dialogue between Mehrtens and me at the time. Our dialogue was influenced by our different upbringing and socialization in the two parts of Germany, and by different, though complementary, views about the combination of empirical and theoretical approaches to the historiography of mathematics. In the epilogue, I describe how my later work in the decades from the 1990s on the history of mathematics profited much from Mehrtens’ early theoretical and empirical work but was less influenced by his book on modernity. That later work of mine was, however, mostly done at a time when Mehrtens had largely left the field and considered himself increasingly as a “cultural scientist” (Kulturwissenschaftler).
