Static IP, also known as a fixed IP, is a service that assigns a constant, unchanging IP address to a device on the network. Unlike dynamic IP addresses, which change with each connection, a static IP remains the same regardless of how long the device is connected to the network.
Usage: A static IP is often used in situations where a device needs to be accessible at a specific address over time. This includes SODA, servers, research equipment, network cameras, and other services requiring remote access.
How does it work? The device is assigned a specific IP address within the university's network. This is done by the IT service registering the device with the network’s DHCP server using a fixed address.
