The Civil Aviation Authority sets several requirements for businesses operating drones. Therefore, a separate system has been established to approve pilots and drones acquired by UiA. Currently, we can only operate in the open category, which means that, among other things, the drone must always be within visual line of sight, and we must comply with certain weight and speed restrictions.

Insurance covering potential third-party damages is mandatory for drone operations. Government entities fall under a different arrangement. UiA is a so-called self-insurer, which means that we do not have insurance but are instead responsible as a public organization and must pay from our own funds in case of damage or loss. To ensure safety, it is therefore important that pilots and drones operate according to the guidelines provided below.
If you wish to operate as a drone pilot for UiA, you must do the following:
- Take the Civil Aviation Authority's online course and exam
The course and exam are freely available at https://flydrone.no. - Familiarise yourself with UiA's "Operations Manual for UAS"
Occasional day courses will be held on this topic. - Pass the theoretical exam for UiA's operations manual
- Practical self-training
This can be done both on a simulator and with a drone
Description of the training programme (English) - Outdoor practical exam with a drone
Those who have already taken the Civil Aviation Authority's A1/A3 or A2 courses can register as a pilot for UiA at https://flydrone.no.
For self-training, there is a drone simulator available in Kristiansand in D4-007. Small drones can also be borrowed in Kristiansand and Grimstad.
There are no costs associated with the A1/A3 exam and pilot approval at UiA, but if you wish to obtain an A2 certification, there is an exam fee at the Norwegian Public Roads Administration's traffic stations.
How to register a drone as a UiA drone

If you are planning to acquire or already have a drone you wish to use for activities related to UiA, it is important to get it registered and properly marked before any flight takes place. This is because UiA will cover any potential third-party damage in the event of an accident. The Civil Aviation Authority requires that UiA has marked drones and a register of these.
Only approved UiA pilots can operate drones for UiA.
