More and more people are starting their own podcasts.

Here are some resources for those wondering how to get started.

Things to consider first

  • Do you need a podcast?
The format is suitable for sharing episodic content over a longer period with a broad audience. If you have two or three audio files you want to share with your students, you might consider using Canvas instead.

  • Who is your audience?
Knowing your target audience affects how much technical jargon you use, which topics you choose, and how you present the podcast. Is your audience students, peers, or the general public?

  • Podcast format:
Will you present alone, have a regular co-host, or invite new guests for each episode?

  • Publishing frequency:
To build listener expectations, release episodes regularly—weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. If committing to a schedule feels challenging, consider working in seasons, with each semester as one season of episodes. This also allows for breaks during holidays.

Podcast studios at UiA

IT department's media centre, Campus Kristiansand

Two studios, each with three microphones.

Media Center staff can (depending on availability) assist with recording, editing, and producing jingles/music.

Studios D4023 and D4024 can be booked via Outlook.

Contact the Media Centre or search for "Podcast" in the Service Portal.

Undervisningsverkstedet, Campus Kristiansand

Four microphones and a mixing console available. Undervisningsverkstedet is staffed by student assistants who can help with recording and production.

Priority is given to the teacher education programme during busy periods.

Physical equipment

If you prefer not to use UiA’s podcast studios, you’ll need your own equipment. A microphone, headphones, and a computer are enough to get started. Recording with a mobile phone is also possible if preferred.

For solo recordings, a simple USB microphone like the Røde NT-USB Mini is recommended.

For multiple participants in the same room, consider using UiA’s studios, as you would need more advanced (and expensive) equipment like a sound mixer.

Software

Online Conversations

Platforms like Zoom and Teams are popular at UiA, but note that audio quality will be average.

For higher sound quality, consider services like Squadcast or Riverside.

Editing

Free software like Audacity or Garageband (Mac only) allows you to edit your podcast. This requires time and effort, but the learning curve is manageable. YouTube offers many helpful tutorials.

Online tools like Alitu simplify the process by cleaning audio, handling edits, and adding music easily.

Graphics and music

While podcasts are an audio format, a strong visual identity is crucial for engaging your audience.

Podcast graphics requirements:

  • Square format
  • Between 1400x1400 and 3000x3000 pixels
  • PNG or JPG format
  • File size of 500 KB or less

The division of communication can help you create graphics that align with UiA's visual guidelines.

Jingles and music:

If you’d like an introduction and outro music for your podcast, contact the media centre.

Publishing your podcast

To distribute your podcast to platforms like Apple Music, Spotify, Google, and websites, you need a dedicated hosting service.

UiA has an agreement with Captivate, which enables easy distribution to all major podcast apps at no cost to you.

Through UiA’s agreement, you (and any colleagues you choose) maintain full control over your podcast.

The Communication Department can help you create a user account on Captivate or transfer an existing podcast to UiA’s agreement. During a transfer, all subscribers, episodes, and content will remain intact, ensuring no noticeable changes for your listeners.
