Assessment methods

This page provides an overview of the various assessment methods and types of exams used at the university.

Exam accommodations

Alternative assessment methods can be used for examination candidates who, due to chronic illnesses, are unable to complete the exam using the regular assessment format. The decision is made by the examination office in consultation with the faculty responsible for the subject.

The examination office may grant an extended submission deadline for take-home exams and other major written assignments. An extended submission deadline can also be granted after the exam has begun, provided that there is documentation that the need arose after the start of the exam. Additional exam time cannot be granted after the submission deadline has passed (Forskrift om studier og eksamen ved UiA)

More about exam accommodations

School exam

The response is written in Inspera or on paper.

By default, the Lock DownBrowser is enabled, which prevents students from accessing other websites or files on their computer during the exam.

The text editor can also be combined with handwritten responses.

The assignment must be ready at least one week before the exam day.

The course leader must be available by phone during the exam or arrange for a substitute if necessary.

Oral exam

Oral exams may count for a specified portion of the final grade or serve as an adjustment. After the adjustment oral exam, the grade for the written or practical work can be adjusted up or down by a maximum of one grade.

  4. When the oral examination is carried out in a group, the examiners shall check that all examination candidates in the group are examined to the extent that provides an adequate basis for assigning a mark.

  6. The examiners together are responsible for the planning and execution of oral examinations according to these regulations, the course description and other applicable guidelines set by the faculty board.

Whether or not the candidate has passed the written or practical part must be announced at least 24 hours before the oral examination.
  8. If an examination candidate withdraws from an oral examination, this is recorded in the assessment list.

Submission of assignment

Inspera is used for the submission and retrieval of take-home exams and semester assignments.

Group submissions require pre-settings in WISEflow. When group submissions are needed, advance notice must be given to the examination office well before the exam is scheduled to be created in WISEflow.

The assignment text must be available in Inspera at least one week before the exam start date.

The course leader must be available for questions, or alternatively, arrange for a substitute when the examination begins.

Group assignment

Group submissions require pre-settings in WISEflow. When a group submission is needed, advanced notice must be given to the examination office well before the exam set is to be created in WISEflow.

When students open a group assignment in Inspera, they are instructed to join a group before accessing the exam. This is done as follows:

  • The first group member who logs in creates the group with an optional four-digit PIN code.
  • The other group members join the existing group within the deadline.
  • One of the members uploads and submits the response on behalf of all.

Bachelor's thesis

The submission of bachelor's theses is carried out in the same manner as other assignment submissions. Students can use a standard cover page template from UiA, but this is not a formal requirement. The title students register in WISEflow will appear on their diploma.

If the submission is to be done in groups, please refer to the information about group assignments provided above.

Portfolio

Smaller submissions, homework, reports, or similar assessments that are collectively graded. Unfortunately, Inspera does not have a technical solution for such a setup, so this is often done in Canvas. All submissions are organised by the course leader, but the grading for the overall result of the folder is recorded in Inspera.

Only written assignments or other work of a nature that allows for assessment verification can be included in a folder. Written supervised exams cannot be included in a folder as per regulations for study programmes and examinations at UiA §14-6.
