Students have the right to file a written appeal against their grade, as per the Norwegian Act on Universities and University Colleges § 5-3 (4). The deadline for submitting an appeal is three weeks after the exam result is announced. If the student has requested an explanation for the grade or appealed formal errors, the appeal deadline begins once the explanation is provided or the appeal regarding formal errors is resolved. There is no right to appeal oral exams, practical training, or other assessments that cannot be reviewed.
Students can also appeal formal errors in the exam process and individual decisions. Information about the appeal process and general procedural requirements can be found on the appeals page.
Appeal process for grading
- The exam office receives and registers appeals on grading.
- Exam papers, answers, and examiner guidelines are collected.
- The exam office sends the necessary documents to both internal and external examiners once the appeal deadline has passed.
- A fee form for the external examiner is included in the submission.
- The new grade, signed by both examiners, is sent to the exam office within the deadline.
- If the new grade differs by two or more points from the original grade, an additional review must take place before the final grade is determined, as per the Norwegian Act on Universities and University Colleges § 5-3 (6). This regulation came into effect on 1 July 2018.
- Both the original examining committee and the appeals committee must re-evaluate the grade.
- The final result is registered by the exam office and communicated to the candidates. Candidates may request an explanation of their grade, but the result itself cannot be appealed.
