General description and profile of the programme

The programme aims to give students an introduction in educational use of The School Library including knowledge of and skills in how to organise, develop and maintain a school library as well as an introduction in literature and media.
The programme may be included in the optional part of General Teacher Education, in several Bachelor Programmes, in a self-made Bachelor Programme and may be a further education for teachers in primary school and in upper secondary school.

Teaching and learning methods

This is a part-time study programme over two semesters. Two voluntary gatherings, one in each semester, will be arranged in Kristiansand. Most of the teaching and supervision takes place on a digital learning platform. Students will meet a variety of teaching- and supervision methods, like screen recordings, video and written lectures.

The practice will have the scope of approximately one week, and is to be documented in a report which is one of the mandatory examination requirements.

The project work: The student chooses the theme for the project work in agreement with the teacher. It may very well have the character of R&D work, and be located at the student’s own school. The project work is part of the final assessment.

The workload is estimated at 800 hours.

Assessment methods

One comprehensive differentiated grade will be given, determined by several separate components. For more information see course descriptions.

Internationalisation

All courses in School Library Science have some international prescribed texts. This is mostly Nordic in School Library Science 1 and 2, and mostly American in School Library Science 3. Sweden and the US are leading countries in the field, and they are included as examples in lectures and literature.

The language of teaching is Norwegian.

Occupational profiles of graduates and access to further studies

The programme may qualify teachers for work in the school library, primarily in primary school. However, several parts of the programme may also be relevant for teachers responsible for the school library at the secondary school level. It is possible for students to continue on to the continuing education programmes School Library Science 2 (Children's literature) and School Library Science 3 (Information Literacy and Reading Development).
