General description and profile of the programme

The programme focuses on different aspects of learning Norwegian in Norway and provides a solid foundation for teaching Norwegian to native speakers of other languages than Norwegian. It is aimed at teachers who teach or who would like to teach Norwegian as a second language to children, youth and young adults. The programme is organised as part-time, running over two semesters and consisting of two 15 ECTS courses: NO-141 Introduction to Norwegian as a Second Language and Cultural Studies and NO-142 Second Language Teaching and Cultural Studies. NO-141 is a prerequisite for NO- 142. NO-141 gives a basic introduction to linguistic, literary and didactic topics related to Norwegian as a second language. NO-142 further develops some of the topics from NO-141, but has a stronger emphasis on the relation between language, culture and identity, and on the contrastive approach to language teaching.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching will take place in study sessions over two semesters, and consist of lectures, discussions and group work. There are four mandatory assignments announced at the start of each semester. The language of instruction is Norwegian.

Assessment methods

Individual written and oral examination. See course descriptions for NO-141 and NO-142.

Internationalisation

The programme has a comparative perspective on language structure, cultural knowledge and didactics.

Requirements for continuing in the study programme

NO-141 has to be passed before students will be allowed to continue on to NO-142.
