General description and profile of the programme

This study programme's subject area is education and is comprised of topics associated with learning, education, training, instruction and socialisation. Emphasis is placed on students' development of a broad knowledge within these areas. The programme also concentrates on topics of relevance for educational practice and theoretical development, including questions associated with competency, globalisation, communication, cultural diversity and digital literacy.

Choosing education as a profession in both the current and future employment market is also a central topic. The programme prepares students for working in education in order to provide both instruction and skills development for various age groups in both the public and private sector. The programme prepares graduates for admission to the Master's Degree Programme in Education.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, seminars, group work, individual work and individual/group advisement. Student-active work forms are used in all forms of instruction.

It is a requirement that all students at UiA have their own portable computer (laptop) for use in teaching and examinations, see Examination Regulations, University of Agder, §12d.

Assessment methods

Examination forms are varied and consist of individual written examinations, individual oral examinations, individual home examinations, oral group examinations with individual marks, and a bachelor's thesis on a chosen topic.

Internationalisation

We offer student exchange during term 5 of the programme. The University of Agder has student exchange agreements with several universities and colleges abroad. We offer student exchange through established mobility programmes such as Erasmus+ and Nordplus. Our university has both the ECTS label and the Diploma Supplement label.

A list of our options for studying abroad is found on the University’s site for student exchange. For further information, contact our advisor for student exchange Tone Frøysnes (tone.froysnes@uia.no).

Students who have studied abroad are well equipped to take the courses PED237 “Characteristics of Norwegian and Comparative Education” or PED221 “International Issues in Inclusive Education” during term 6. By taking these courses after studying abroad, students have a good foundation for delving into comparative and international subjects in their bachelor’s thesis.

The language of teaching is Norwegian.
