General description and profile of the programme
Teaching and learning methods
Learning approach
The programme is based on a sociocultural view of learning that emphasises learning as a shared activity and as a social practice. Learning requires the student to work independently, but at the same time learning also takes place in interaction with others, in a learning community that includes fellow students, teachers and others.
Forms of work
The programme emphasises the integration of theoretical knowledge and clinical experience and emphasises varied teaching and working methods and close follow-up of the individual student. Feedback is provided during the programme in the form of various evaluation interviews, several minor exams and the submission of assignments. Various forms of student-active methods are used, such as group work, seminars, reflection and counselling groups, skills training, simulation, practical studies and self-study. Lectures are also given. When working on the master's thesis, students participate in counselling groups and seminars. Particular emphasis is placed on progression in the work on the master's thesis, for example through presentation of the problem and choice of methods with feedback from fellow students and teachers.
Assessment methods
Varied forms of assessment are used to ensure coherence with the various courses' learning outcomes and working methods and to ensure the integrity and quality of the programme.
Theoretical courses are assessed through school exams and home exams.
Practical studies are assessed in various formal conversations, which are described in detail in the course booklets for the master's programme. The formal conversation are conversations between the student, teacher and internship supervisor and are intended to provide an assessment of the student in relation to the learning outcomes achieved. Mandatory attendance of at least 90 per cent in practical studies is required, and examination requirements must be approved.
The master's thesis is assessed by internal and external examiners. The written thesis must be assessed to a passing grade before the candidate can present themselves for an oral, adjusting exam.
For more information about the grading scale and exam guidelines, see the Regulations for studies and exams at the University of Agder.
Internationalisation
The nursing profession and nursing science are largely international, which is reflected in the knowledge base of the programme. Topics of an international nature are addressed in both years of the programme. In some of the courses, parts of the teaching may take place in English and literature in English is included.
The faculty of Health- and sport sciences facilitates student exchange through established mobility programs, such as Erasmus + and Nordplus, in addition to bilateral agreements with universities in countries outside the EU, such as in Africa, Australia, and the United States.
Students can apply to write their master's thesis in connection with the exchange programme. The Master’s programme is open to incoming students with study programmes with similar content and level.
Requirements for continuing in the study programme
Courses in the first semester must be passed before teaching and assessment in courses in the third semester. Courses in the second semester must be passed before teaching and assessment in courses in the fourth semester.
The courses Scientific Theory and Research Methods, Design and Analysis must be passed before the student can receive supervision on the master's thesis. All courses must be passed before the master's thesis can be submitted.
A written project plan for the master's degree project must be submitted during the second semester of the programme. Work on the master's thesis cannot begin until the project plan has been approved. The project plan must follow the guidelines described in the master's handbook.
