About the programme

Learn the French language and cultural history to open the door to career opportunities in France and beyond. With more than 200 million speakers worldwide, French is in high global demand and is an official language in international organisations such as the United Nations and NATO.

What will you learn?

By completing the one-year programme, you will significantly improve your spoken and written French while gaining a strong understanding of the language, literature, and cultural context. You will develop analytical and critical thinking skills, learn to work academically with others, and gain valuable insight into French society and the wider Francophone world — essential competencies for further studies and a wide range of career paths.

Teaching methods

Teaching language: French

Teaching in the French programme takes place both in joint sessions and small groups, offering close interaction with fellow students and personalised academic support. The curriculum draws on literature and language resources from across the Francophone world, with much of the teaching conducted in French. The programme also welcomes exchange students from French-speaking countries, contributing to a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.

Learning environment

Students and staff in the French programme are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment, with close and informal contact between students and lecturers. As part of the programme, you are offered a five-week study stay at the University of Caen in Normandy.

Language students share a common student association that organises social and academic activities throughout the year. Kristiansand is known as a vibrant student city with a wide range of cultural and recreational opportunities, and the campus offers excellent facilities for individual study, group work, and social life — with the student centre Bare located in the city centre.

Career prospects

A one-year programme in French can complement other education or work experience and open doors to a wide range of careers where language skills are important. It can be applied in fields such as literature and cultural dissemination, media, publishing, or international work. The specific combination of courses and academic focus you choose will guide you towards particular career paths and professional opportunities.
