About the programme

The one-year programme offers a comprehensive introduction to English linguistics, literature, and culture.

Developing a strong understanding of language details equips you with transferable skills relevant to all forms of communication, in English as well as in other languages. Competence in English-language literature and culture opens up opportunities for careers and collaborative projects with businesses, universities, and public-sector organisations worldwide.

Students are normally offered the opportunity to go on a study trip to York, UK, during the spring semester.

What will you learn?

Throughout the programme, you will develop strong oral and written English skills and gain detailed knowledge of the structure and systems of the language. You will be trained to analyse literary works and understand the cultural contexts in which they were written, and you will acquire theoretical tools for studying language, literature, and culture from an academic perspective.

You will learn to write analytical texts on a range of topics related to literature, culture, and language, while developing critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently. Teaching methods are varied, and students are encouraged to participate actively, both orally and in writing, individually as well as in pairs or groups.

Teaching methods

Teaching language: English

Through lectures, seminars, and group work, students improve their English proficiency, strengthen their analytical skills, and develop the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Seminar attendance is mandatory, and active participation is expected. Assessment methods are varied and reflect the forms of teaching used throughout the programme.

Learning environment

Students and staff in the English programme are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. There is close interaction between students, lecturers, and student mentors.

As an English student, you become a member of the student association Linguistica, which brings together students from the one-year programme to the master’s level. Both social and academic events are organised throughout the academic year.

Follow the student association Linguistica on Facebook.

First-semester support through the mentor programme God start helps ensure a safe and supportive introduction to both academic and social life.

Kristiansand is known as an excellent student city, offering a wide range of cultural events and leisure activities. The campus is well suited for individual study, group work, and social activities, and the student centre Bare is located in the city centre.
