About the programme

Our master's programme in specialist nursing is designed to meet the high demands of today's healthcare system, with a focus on educating specialist nurses who can provide care to acutely and critically ill patients and contribute to the development of evidence-based practice within their area of responsibility.

You can choose between five specialisations: Anaesthesia Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Intensive Care Nursing, Surgical Nursing, or Cancer Nursing, each aimed at developing in-depth skills and knowledge in its respective field.

Our approach integrates academic theory with practical skills, reinforced through simulations and laboratory work that reflect real-life scenarios.

What will you learn?

The programme consists of both common and field-specific areas, as well as methodology and the theory of science. Together, this provides the knowledge and skills necessary to carry out research projects relevant to acute and critical care nursing. The specialised subjects explore the unique challenges and coping strategies associated with being acutely or critically ill, with a significant portion of the studies dedicated to clinical experience. The master's thesis is an independent scientific work, offering an opportunity to contribute to research and development in the field.

Teaching methods

The teaching combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience. You will participate in lectures and seminars, as well as utilise our modern simulation and clinical laboratory to apply theories in practice. This approach ensures that you are well-prepared for the real-world challenges you will face in your professional career.

Language of instruction: Norwegian (some courses may be taught in English)

Clinical Placement

The practical component of the programme comprises 45 credits and provides you with valuable experience over 30 weeks at various clinical departments. This offers a unique opportunity to apply and further develop your skills in realistic healthcare settings, under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Learning environment

With a strong focus on collaboration and professional development, we offer a supportive and engaging learning environment. Our modern simulation and clinical laboratory form the core of our practical approach, providing you as a student with a unique opportunity to prepare for future challenges in healthcare.

Career prospects

The programme prepares you for a range of advanced roles in specialist and municipal healthcare services, from specialised hospital departments to leadership, teaching, and research.

What can I do with my degree?

Upon completing your education, you can work as an anaesthesia nurse, paediatric nurse, intensive care nurse, or surgical nurse. Additional opportunities include roles in teaching, research, leadership, or within municipal healthcare services, where you will play a crucial role in improving patient care.

Further studies

A master's degree opens the door to further academic studies, including PhD programmes in nursing science or related fields, as well as specialisations in specific areas of specialist nursing.

It also provides opportunities for an academic career or specialised roles in research and higher education.
