About the programme
The Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Agder, Norway, invites students from the Nordic countries and EU/EEA to attend the 15-credit summer course Site-Specific Art - Lesbos. The participants included those from visual arts and performing arts disciplines such as theatre, dance and music.
Understanding various artistic approaches to site-specific art is a key course part. Lesbos holds significant historical and contemporary importance, and you will work both independently and collaboratively to undergo a thorough and intensive investigation of art around the physical site to interpret the island’s past and present.
The course is hybrid, using digital media throughout. Students will meet educators on June 4 at UiA in Kristiansand to start their projects. Online participation is available for those who are unable to attend in person. The intensive workshop on Lesbos from August 3-10 involves independent, site-specific practice. The final presentation and examination will be in September.
What will you learn?
Upon completing the course, students will:
- Demonstrate familiarity with various forms of site-specific art.
- Have created artistic projects engaging with contemporary issues on Lesbos.
- Understand key issues and modes of expression in contemporary site-specific art.
- Develop both aesthetic and ethical awareness in site-specific artistic practices.
- Effectively utilise digital media for documentation, communication, and artistic production.
- Critically reflect on their work and the site-specific work of others, assess artistic practices, and communicate their insights effectively.
Teaching and assessment methods
June 4: Kick-off at the University of Agder, Kristiansand, Norway

Preliminary Work
Students are expected to begin developing their projects immediately. Following the kick-off, each student will submit a written proposal for an art project inspired by Lesbos, reflecting on its historical and contemporary significance.
August 3–10 workshop on Lesbos
This intensive workshop, led by Assoc. Professor Elmedin Žunić, focuses on independent or collaborative site-specific artistic practice, with daily supervision and discussions.
Follow-up work and examination
After the workshop, students will continue refining their projects under the guidance of their supervisor. The final examination consists of a digital presentation of the completed art project and a reflective written statement, concluding in September.
