Kiel is the capital and most populous city of the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is located approximately 90 kilometres north of Hamburg and about 95 kilometres south of the Danish border. The city’s position on the southeastern coast of the Jutland Peninsula and the southwestern shore of the Baltic Sea has established Kiel as one of Germany’s major maritime centres. Several renowned international sailing events are hosted here, including the annual Kiel Week, which is the largest sailing event in the world.
