Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

Teaching language

Norwegian and English

Prerequisites

Completed 60 ECTS credits in mathematics

Learning outcomes

The student

  • has insight into basic principles for designing and implementing different teaching methods and activities in mathematics
  • has insight into digital resources as part of a teaching process and critically analyzes their contribution to students' learning
  • has insight into learning theories, with emphasis on socio-cultural theory and constructivism, what consequences these can have for planning the teaching of mathematics, and can use learning theory as support for analyzing learning and learning activities adapted to the existing curriculum in the school with particular emphasis on the school's 5th-10th grade
  • knows about different learning resources for use in mathematics such as concrete materials, games and websites, and can analyze their use
  • can develop a project on mathematics education in connection with the school, can analyze and discuss the project, and convey insights from the work orally

Contents

Introduction to mathematics didactic research especially relevant for mathematics teaching on grades 5-10. The course includes key aspects of learning and teaching mathematics. Learning theories, learning resources and teaching resources are central. Different ways of teaching, different types of tasks and digital tools are also a central part of the course. The course includes the development of a project on mathematics education in connection with the school.

The subject in practice In practice, the student will gain experience in the use of various mathematical activities and teaching resources in mathematics and student-active teaching methods where the student will gain experience with different forms of assessment. In the project assignment, the student will do a research or development work where a chosen topic in mathematics is studied, analysed and discussed. The outcomes and insights are communicated orally and in writing.

Teaching and learning methods

Joint teaching, work in small groups and supervised work with project work.

Mandatory work requirements that can be completed either by physical participation or by submissions. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended.

It is included 25 days of teaching practice.

The course has an expected scope of work of 400 hours, where 100 hours is associated with the teaching practice. Other students will perform a didactic work of similar scope as practice.

Examination requirements

The teacher education students

  • approved required assignments. (see Canvas for more information)
  • approved practice

Other students

  • approved portfolio collection of mathematical tasks.(see Canvas for more information)
  • approved didactic work of similar scope as practice

Examinations

Oral individual exam. Graded assessment.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
