Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Subject didactics in Teacher Education Level 1-7, Experience-based Master's Programme

Teaching language

Norwegian and English

Prerequisites

Completed 60 ECTS credits in mathematics

Learning outcomes

The student

  • has in-depth knowledge of what it means to learn mathematics and can use learning theory as support for analyzing teaching and learning activities adapted to the existing curriculum in the school
  • develops competence in facilitating teaching and assessment in line with the existing curriculum and mathematics didactic research in the field
  • can analyze the use of current teaching resources in mathematics with particular emphasis on textbooks, digital teaching aids, adaptive learning systems, artificial intelligence and online resources
  • can develop a mathematics didactic project in connection with the school, can analyze and discuss the project, and convey insights from the work orally.

Contents

Introduction to mathematics didactic research especially relevant for mathematics teaching in 1.-7. grade levels in school. Different learning theories are elucidated from a mathematics didactic perspective. The students get experience of evaluating the use of various teaching resources for planning and conducting teaching, including pupil active teaching methods. They shall, building upon theory, plan and conduct teaching including inquiry and problem solving, where the pupils reason and argue their solutions. The students will through the course gain knowledge about providing assessment that supports students' learning of mathematics. The course includes the development of a project on mathematics education in connection with the school.

The subject in practice The student will in practice gain experience in the use of various teaching resources in mathematics and student teaching methods. In the project assignment, the student must do a survey or a development work where a chosen teaching method and use of specific resources are studied, analyzed, discussed and where insight is then communicated orally and in writing.

Teaching and learning methods

Joint teaching, work in small groups and supervised work with project work.

Mandatory work requirements that can be completed either by physical participation or by submissions. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly recommended.

It is included 25 days of teaching practice.

The course has an expected scope of work of 400 hours, where 100 hours is associated with the teaching practice. Other students will perform a didactic work of similar scope as practice. The students themselves will use and especially analyze the use of digital tools as one of many teaching resources in mathematics.

Examination requirements

The teacher education students

  • approved required assignments. (see Canvas for more information)
  • approved practice

Other students

  • approved portfolio collection of mathematical tasks.(see Canvas for more information)
  • approved didactic work of similar scope as practice

Examinations

Oral individual exam. Graded assessment.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.
