Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this course the student should:
- have knowledge of key methods for econometric analysis of various types of data
- have a deep understanding of the difference between causality and correlation
- have insight into practical methods for empirical evaluation
- be able to perform all steps in a professional data analysis
- be able to interpret and critically evaluate econometric results from one's own and others' analyses
- be able to present empirical results clearly, structured, and professionally
Contents
As data collection in both the private and public sectors increases, the ability to conduct precise data analyses becomes ever more crucial. This course introduces key econometric methods with a practical focus. Students will learn to conduct data analyses, evaluate others' empirical work, and distinguish between causality and correlation. Necessary econometric theory is introduced continuously throughout the course.
Main areas for the course will be:
- Linear Multiple Regression: Introduction to regression analysis, and model specification.
- Hypothesis Testing: Basic principles of statistical significance.
- Regression with Binary Dependent Variable: Applications with binary outcome variables.
- Experiments and Quasi-Experiments: Use of experimental designs for causal identification.
- Panel Data Analysis: Analysis of data combining cross-sectional and time-series data.
- Diff-in-Diff: Evaluation of the effects of political and economic interventions.
- Instrumental Variables: Methods for addressing endogeneity issues and identifying causal effects.
- Introduction to Big Data: Use and exploitation of large datasets in econometric analyses.
