Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Mechatronics, Bachelor's Programme

Teaching language

Norwegian

Prerequisites

The course requires the student to follow MAS135, MAS236 and MAS237.

Recommended previous knowledge

The students should have successfully completed MA-179 mathematics 2, MAS100 Mechanics, MAS134 Electrical circuits and digital control and MAS132 3D design.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the students will:

  • Have gained basic understanding of methods applied for dimensioning a mechatronic system encompassing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic engineering elements that require a creative design method.
  • Be able to critically evaluate applied methods and their results.
  • Be able to apply the governing steady state equations for electric and hydraulic systems.
  • Be able to apply variable speed operations when using AC machines.
  • Be able to select electric and hydraulic components for a given application.
  • Be able to use the finite element method in static stress analysis.
  • Be able to apply linear finite element methods including solution of systems of geometrically linear problems, contact problems and linear material models.
  • Be able to perform simulation using a commercial finite element software. (e.g., Solidworks Simulation).
  • Be able to dimension typical machine components used in a mechatronic system. (e.g. welds, bearings, shafts, etc.)

Contents

The design project will be conducted as an extension of the bachelor courses Material science, Machine elements and FEM , and Actuation systems 1 that are given in the third semester of the bachelor program in mechatronics at the University of Agder. The project consists in a hands-on multidisciplinary course focused on dimensioning the mechanical structure and actuation of mechatronic systems. The student shall combine knowledge in mechanics, electric engineering and hydraulics for the design of mechatronic applications.

Teaching and learning methods

Project work in groups. Use of software for 3D design, calculations and simulations.

Examination requirements

Satisfactory submission of mandatory project report.

Examinations

Project report carried out in groups, with oral presentation and defense of the project. Group assessment. Graded assessment.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Reduction of Credits

This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:
