Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Mechatronics, Bachelor's Programme

Teaching language

Norwegian/Scandinavian/English

Recommended previous knowledge

MAS132 3D design and MAS100 Mechanics.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student

  • have basic knowledge about calculation and construction of mechanical components
  • understand the mode of operation and the requirements of the components
  • be able to choose the proper materials and to design with regards to industrial design
  • apply finite element based tools for optimization/verification of mechanical constructions
  • verify and estimate the accuracy of the above mentioned analysis
  • have a basic knowledge to the theoretical fundament for the finite element method including stiffness matrix for different types of elements, theory of elasticity and criteria for dimensioning

Contents

  • Principal stresses, design against static failure and fatigue failure of selected machine elements (Whöler-curves/SN-diagrams and Goodman diagrams) - for example dimensioning of shafts, bearings, beams
  • Calculation of mechanical components: Static dimensioning, fatigue, bolt connections, Shafts, bearings
  • Use of Finite element method (FEM): Background and philosophy. Static linear systems: Stress/strain simulations, matrix statics, truss, beam and solid elements, application of boundary conditions and load conditions, use of computer programs.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures and tutorials.

Expected work load for the average student is 27 hours/credit point

Examination requirements

Satisfactory submission of compulsory exercises.

Examinations

50% written examination, 3 hours. Graded assessment.

50% a portfolio with individual tests and assignments. Graded assessment. More information about the portfolio will be given in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Offered as a free-standing course

Yes. Subject to availability or capacity.
