Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the students should
- understand the principles and limitations of different radio access techniques in mobile communication networks, from first to fifth generation
- understand the key components and protocols of cellular core networks from circuit-switched to packet-switched and towards all-IP
- have knowledge of the major trends and technologies for next generation cellular networks
- have knowledge of performance evaluation of existing and future mobile networking technologies
Contents
The main goal of this course is to provide the students with knowledge of cellular networks from first generation to today's fifth generation and tomorrow's sixth generation, including both radio access networks and core networks.
The course covers the following topics:
- Overview of communication networks from circuit-switched to packet-switched
- Medium access mechanisms for cellular radio access networks such as 1G TACS/AMPS, 2G GSM/GPRS, 3G UMTS, 4G LTE/LTE-A, and 5G NR
- Architectures and protocols for cellular core network evolution towards an all IP-based network
- Mobile communication towards 2030: What is 6G?
- Quality of service in cellular networks and network performance evaluation
