Contents

Working with electricity is associated with danger and therefore require accuracy and system overview. The area is highly regulated by laws and regulations, and those who work with electricity must be able to follow safety procedures to prevent accidents. The course emphasizes basic knowledge of laws and regulations for safety. Each task is performed on the basis of evidence, rules and regulations. The purpose of this course is to enable the candidate to understand how skilled workers performs tasks in various live plants in small and large buildings.

The course describes and explains lightning pennies and their propagation in an electrical network by using traveling wave model and reflection diagram. Overvoltages and temporary overvoltages are also presented. High voltage components like cables, fuses, circuit breakers and surge arresters will be processed. The physical processes with regard to the impact mechanism in gases and solids will be discussed and explained.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, demonstrations, laboratory exercises and exercises done by hand and with the use of computer programs.

Estimated work load for the average student is 27 hours per credit.

Examination requirements

Mandatory assignments must be approved to take the exam.

Examinations

Written individual exam, 4 hours. Graded assessment. The exam can be answered in English or Norwegian.

Student evaluation

The person responsible for the course decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1."
