Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

  • Offshore Wind Energy

Teaching language

English

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics, mechanics of materials, mechanical vibration, and applied statistics. The course requires prerequisites equivalent to ENE903 Design practices and ENE904 Foundations and substructures.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • have knowledge of dynamic properties of bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines.
  • have knowledge of dynamic properties of floating offshore wind turbines.
  • can carry out aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations of offshore wind turbines in a software.
  • can perform data post-processing and design checks based on the simulation results.

Contents

Static and eigenvalue analysis of bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines - graphical user interface of software (material, structure, element type, boundary condition), numerical methods, results.

Dynamic analysis of bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines - material, structure, elements, boundary condition, wind loads, wave loads, numerical methods, results.

Decay tests of floating offshore wind turbines -definition of coordinate system, floater and mooring system, numerical method, results.

Dynamic analysis of floating offshore wind turbines -definition of coordinate system, floater and mooring system, environmental loads, numerical method, results.

Design check for bottom-fixed and floating offshore wind turbines -design load cases, simulation setup, fatigue damage, ultimate load strength.

Teaching and learning methods

Online lectures and exercises. Estimated workload for the average student is approximately 70 hours.

Examinations

Assessment of the individual project assignment leading to Pass/Fail. Further information on the assessment criterion will be given in Canvas at the beginning of the semester.

Student evaluation

A digital evaluation will be organized in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.

Offered as a free-standing course

Yes, if there are places available.

Admission Requirement if given as a free-standing course

Admission requirements for the course are the same as for the Study programme on Offshore Wind
