Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

Teaching language

English

Recommended previous knowledge

Basic courses in thermodynamics, kinetics, heat transport and mass transport.

Learning outcomes

On completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • apply thermodynamic equations to materials science problems.
  • interpret binary and ternary phase diagrams.
  • discuss and solve chemical reaction problems.
  • define and solve heat transport and mass transport problems.

Contents

Thermodynamics and kinetics offer important tools and understanding of materials and their properties, both in equilibrium and during processing. The aim of the course is to give the students knowledge in how thermodynamic phenomena and kinetic processes can be applied to bulk and nanomaterials, as well as how it can be used to formulate and solve problems relevant to their own research. The course will review the basics of thermodynamic equilibrium, phase diagrams, reaction kinetics, heat transport and mass transport in both solids and fluids.

Teaching and learning methods

The teaching will be a combination of lectures, exercises and self-study. The course is primary intended for Doctoral degree students at the Faculty of Science and Technology. However, external students may be accepted into the course after careful evaluation. Lectures will be given partly in person and on-line.

Examination requirements

To be allowed to attend the exam, the assignments must have been approved.

Examinations

Oral examination. Pass/Fail.

Offered as a free-standing course

Yes.

Admission Requirement if given as a free-standing course

Must be admitted to a PhD programme.

Admission for external candidates

No.
