Recommended previous knowledge

MA-178 Mathematics 1 and MA-179 Mathematics 2, or equivalent.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the student should be able to 
  • set up equations for planes, and to find their surface normal vector 
  • set up multivariate integrals, and apply them to calculations of volume, center of mass and moments of inertia 
  • find Fourier series of periodic functions 
  • solve partial differential equations like the heat equation and the wave equation by means of Fourier series 

Contents

Vectors, lines and planes in three dimensions. Multivariate integrals with applications. Fourier series including application for solving partial differential equations.

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures, tutorial groups for exercises, mandatory assignments. Information on exercises will be given in Canvas.  

Examination requirements

Enough approved mandatory exercises. Information about mandatory assignments will be given in Canvas at the start of the semester. 

Examinations

Individual written exam, 3 hours. Graded A-F.

Admission Requirement if given as a free-standing course

Higher Education Entrance Qualification including mathematics R1 and R2 and physics 1, or a pass in the preliminary course examination for engineers (which is also offered at University of Agder).
