Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to

  • Master a variety of algebraic operations, including solving inequalities, equations and systems of equations.
  • Analyze functions of one variable, such as polynomials, rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and also combinations of these. This analysis should include: zeros, asymptotes, limits, continuity, differentiation (including implicit differentiation), extreme value problems and elasticity.
  • Analyze different types of functions of many variables (including Cobb-Douglas functions and functions composed with exponential and logarithmic functions). This analysis includes to find and to classify stationary points, to find maximum and minimum in a bounded area, to find maximum and minimum under constrains, including applications of the Lagrange method.
  • Analyze arithmetic and geometric series, analyze convergence of geometric series and find the sum of convergent infinite geometric series.
  • Solve problems in mathematical finance, including annuities, paying off loans, annuities of savings and present values.
  • Use basic integration in connection to the above mentioned functions.
