Table of contents

The course is connected to the following study programs

Teaching language

Norwegian.

Recommended previous knowledge

Knowledge of math and physics corresponding to high school courses Matematikk R2, Fysikk 1, Fysikk 2, as well as FYS124 Mekanikk 1.

Learning outcomes

  • On successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
  • Recognize and use the wave equation, as well as deriving it for simple systems.
  • Recognize that different boundary conditions gives qualitatively different solutions of the wave equation.
  • Qualitatively and quantitatively analyze diffraction-, interference-, and dispersion phenomena.
  • Use the laws of geometrical optics to qualitatively and quantitatively describe optical instruments.
  • Knowledge of group and phase velocity.
  • Knowing and using the central principles of special relativity.

Contents

  • Oscillation phenomena in mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Resonances and quality factors for oscillations.
  • Mechanical- and Electromagnetic waves.
  • Phase velocity and group velocity.
  • Standing and moving waves.
  • Coherence, diffraction, and interference.
  • The special theory of relativity.

Teaching and learning methods

Instruction is provided in the form of lectures and laboratory exercises. The lectures will include demonstrations, problem solving exercises. Information will be given in Canvas at the start of the course.

Examination requirements

100% compulsory attendance to all laboratory exercises and approval of reports from all laboratory exercises.

Examinations

4-hour written individual examination. Graded assessment.

Student evaluation

The study programme manager, in consultation with the student representative, decides the method of evaluation and whether the courses will have a midterm- or end of term evaluation, see also the Quality System, section 4.1. Information about evaluation method for the course will be posted on Canvas.

Reduction of Credits

This course’s contents overlap with the following courses. A reduction of credits will occur if one of these courses is taken in addition:
