Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, students should be able to
  • analyze different text types and genres
  • distinguish between different stylistic levels
  • produce coherent texts in formal and informal English
  • understand techniques for preserving textual structure and function in translation
  • use corpora and electronic dictionaries in translation and text production

Contents

Focus will be on

  • meaning in context
  • discourse analysis
  • cohesion and coherence
  • text types, text functions, genres and stylistic levels
  • intertextuality
  • readability
  • use of corpus tools and other language technology tools in translation and text production

These aspects are studied from a contrastive perspective, enhanced by translation exercises.

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching will be in the form of lectures and student work, group work, use of language technology tools. Workload: 270 hours.

Examination requirements

Six obligatory assignments must be submitted and passed.

Examinations

Two-day individual home exam. Graded assessment.

Student evaluation

The study programme manager decides, in cooperation with student representative, the form of student evaluation and whether the course is to have a midway or end of course evaluation in accordance with the quality system for education, chapter 4.1.
