AIMWind – Extending Wind Turbine Lifetime and Profitability.

Purpose

Wind turbines are typically designed for a lifespan of 20–25 years, based on the assumption of evenly distributed loads across turbines in a wind farm over time. However, experience shows that wear and tear vary significantly due to strong variations in wind dynamics, leading to uneven loads between turbines. As a result, not all turbines in a wind farm will have reached the end of their design life after 25 years, while others may already be far beyond their intended lifespan.

Over the next decade, thousands of wind turbines across Europe will reach their stipulated design life. Which turbines still have remaining service life? Can they continue producing energy safely? These are the questions the AIMWind project seeks to answer.

AIMWind will equip wind turbines with new measurement technology to estimate their condition and wear, enabling control systems to avoid unnecessarily high loads and promote a more holistic operation. This will extend turbine lifespan and increase profitability.

Project description

AIMWind aims to enhance the profitability and lifespan of wind turbines through:
i) The development and application of advanced condition monitoring and prognostics systems to detect faults at an early stage and estimate remaining lifespan.
ii) Leveraging multiple sources of information, including operational data, condition monitoring data, weather data, and inspection data, to assess the condition of individual turbines and the wind farm as a whole.
iii) Developing new control strategies to optimize both wear and energy production based on the current condition of the turbine.

The project is divided into four work packages:

WP1: Condition assessment of turbine components and remaining lifespan

WP2: Low-cost solutions for structural condition monitoring of turbines

WP3: Analysis for wind farm asset management

WP4: Condition-aware wind farm control systems

Work has been carried out in all work packages, with promising results reflected in all approved and published articles.
