Abstract:

Greenland is one of the regions in which pre-modern colonialism laid the foundations for modern colonial relations and has long shaped European historical interest. The medieval Norse settlements on the island served as a justification for Danish colonization and missionary activity in the eighteenth century. But whose history is this? That of the Norse, the Dorset, the Inuit, or of all those who inhabit the island today? This paper investigates the significance of, and shifting paradigms within, the study of pre-modern colonial history in the North Atlantic. The claim “nothing about us without us” is not easily translatable to a region and a period in which most of the historical actors no longer exist.
