Civic engagement activities within the university alliance

As a student in the FORTHEM Alliance, you can participate in various forms of community engagement and democratic involvement.

Civic engagement activities

FORTHEM encourages students to promote and manage volunteering and education projects for development, solidarity and awareness in collaboration with NGOs or other local associations.

These are the main options available:

  • Volunteering packages launched by the University of Valencia in Spain: Two short-term civic engagement projects will be carried out each year (for four years) in collaboration with local NGOs and students, engaging students from other Alliance universities
  • Career and Qualification Campus at the University of Burgundy in France: Two collaborative social projects will be developed each year (for two years), with groups of two students from five FORTHEM partners
  • The Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany will develop one civic engagement project per year (for four years) with local NGOs
  • Coaching of one online civic engagement project with NGOs or enterprises per year (for four years) will take place through the “Team and Client” course created by the University of Jyväskylä in Finland
  • A Civic Engagement Summer School for four students from each partner university will be held each year (for four years) at the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu in Romania

FORTHEM buddies

The programme is held entirely online and is open to all FORTHEM students who would like to connect with fellow students from other FORTHEM universities. It is a great opportunity to gain international experience in an easy way, by participating in online activities or events such as: movie nights, language exchange groups, book clubs and more!

By connecting with students from other FORTHEM universities you will also have a familiar face to greet you if you choose to travel to another campus through one of the many opportunities for international mobility offered by FORTHEM.

Democracy Week: Fostering democratic practices among students

Democracy Week 2025 will take place on 2-6 May in Kristiansand, Norway.

FORTHEM universities are unified in their belief that freedom and democracy are pivotal to helping the alliance foster and facilitate a free exchange and collaboration of ideas in education and research.

As such, FORTHEM will be giving students and staff the opportunity to participate in Democracy Week which is held annually in May in Kristiansand, Norway. Through its participation, the alliance hopes to enhance awareness of democratic practices and issues, among students and staff at the alliances’ nine universities.
