The University of Agder (UiA) has extensive facilities and accommodates thousands of students, staff, and visitors during both day and evening hours. As such, UiA is classified as a high-risk fire object. Annual fire drills are mandatory. Any deviations or misunderstandings must be reported via the Speak Up system.
Fire safety instructions
All employees, students, and visitors at UiA are required to familiarise themselves with and comply with UiA’s fire safety instructions:
When the fire alarm goes off:
- Exit the building via the safest route.
- Close doors and windows behind you.
- Do not use lifts/elevators.
When a fire is detected:
- Alert: Use a manual fire alarm or call the fire brigade on (0) 110.
- Rescue: Ensure people are brought to safety.
- Extinguish: Attempt to extinguish the fire only if it does not compromise your own safety.
Preventive measures:
- Familiarise yourself with the location of escape routes.
- Keep escape routes clear at all times.
- Know the locations of manual fire alarms and firefighting equipment.
- Do not discard matches, cigarettes, or similar items in waste bins.
- Ensure fire equipment, manual alarms, signage, etc., are not covered or damaged.
- Keep spaces organised and clean.
Fire safety goals
The main goal for fire safety at UiA is to prevent fires or fire outbreaks through preventive measures.
Organisation
UiA has a fire safety structure that includes area managers and assembly point leaders for each fire zone.
- Area manager: Responsible for assisting with evacuation and providing an overview of evacuated areas, then reporting this information to the assembly point leader.
- Assembly point leader: The person who meets with the fire brigade and communicates critical information about their designated area.
Escape routes
Escape routes must be kept clear of obstacles or anything that could impede safe evacuation.
Portable electric or oil heaters
The use of portable electric or oil-fired heaters is prohibited in offices or shared spaces.
