Summary of thesis
Organizations across both the public and private sectors are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) for decision support, automated decision-making, and data analysis, often in contexts that have significant consequences for individuals or broader operational impacts in industry. As concerns about algorithmic bias, discriminatory outcomes, and limited transparency in AI systems have intensified, Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) has emerged as a critical organizational priority. In response, the prevailing approach to advancing RAI has centered on the articulation of principles and guidelines, such as accountability, transparency, and fairness, reflected in regulatory frameworks like the EU AI Act and reinforced by growing public awareness of ethical challenges. Building on this context, this multi-method study investigates how organizations interpret and apply such principles to manage and mitigate risks, including bias and privacy violations, while promoting transparency, fairness, and other ethically desirable outcomes. Based on the empirical findings and theoretical contributions, the study identifies key interdependencies and contextual conditions shaping RAI practices and offers practical recommendations to support organizations in operationalizing Responsible AI.
