This is the third cohort of the master’s programme that the School of Business and Law at UiA offers in partnership with UGM in Indonesia, one of Asia’s leading universities. The double degree Master in Sustainability Management is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and aims to educate innovative leaders to drive corporate sustainability.

The 20 motivated ASEAN students were welcomed together with about 400 other MBA students at a ceremonial opening event.

Diplomat Beathe Øgård from the Norwegian embassy in Jakarta and study programme leader Bjørn-Tore Flåten from the School of Business and Law, UiA each gave a speech. Their speeches highlighted the cooperation between Norway and ASEAN, with emphasis on sustainability, innovation and responsible leadership.

'It turned out that Erling Haaland and Norwegian football supporters’ "Viking Row" worked perfectly as an icebreaker during the ceremonial opening, even several thousand kilometres from home,' says Bjørn Tore.

Next 18 months: Teaching, internship and master’s thesis

The programme takes 18 months to complete, and students receive degrees from both UiA and UGM. Several academics from UiA will teach on the programme, and next autumn (2027) even more will contribute to supervision of master’s theses. During that period, the ASEAN students will also come to Norway to write their theses and complete internships in Norwegian organizations.

Over 30 years of cooperation strengthens development of the sustainability MBA

The partnership with UGM and the support from the Norwegian embassy in Indonesia demonstrate how Indonesia’s motto of 'unity in diversity' can be put into practice.

'UGM has a clear ambition to develop a leading MBA programme in sustainability management, and it is inspiring to see how this ambition is pursued through international cooperation, interdisciplinarity and practice oriented learning,' says Bjørn-Tore.
