About the department

The Department of Psychology is responsible for the Professional Degree Programme in Psychology at the University of Agder (UiA). The programme is a six-year course of study leading to the degree of Candidata/candidatus psychologiae (cand.psychol.), which provides the basis for authorisation as a psychologist in Norway. The programme combines a solid foundation in scientific knowledge with training in clinical skills and the development of professional competence, in accordance with the national guidelines for psychology education.

The Department's academic community covers a broad range of psychological disciplines, from foundational areas such as developmental, cognitive and biological psychology to clinical psychology, community psychology, and health promotion and prevention. Research and teaching are closely integrated, and students engage with active researchers throughout the programme.

The Department has a particular focus on basic neuroscience research through the Dynamical Systems Neuroscience Collaboratory (DSyNC) at UiA. Research at DSyNC explores how sensory processing, learning and representation emerge in the brain, using advanced methods in electrophysiology, optogenetics and behavioural analysis. DSyNC forms part of UiA's strategic commitment to neuroscience.
