Summary of thesis

Urban traffic-camera networks generate large amounts of video, making it difficult to locate specific vehicles or events manually. In his doctoral research at the University of Agder, Touseef Sadiq investigates how artificial intelligence can make such video archives effectively searchable using natural-language descriptions.

The research focuses on multimodal artificial intelligence, where information from different sources, in this case traffic video and written descriptions, is combined. A user can, for example, describe a vehicle and its behavior in ordinary language, and the system then identifies and ranks the most relevant vehicle trajectories from the available video.

The work develops this capability step by step, from modular vision-and-language retrieval methods to contrastive learning, multimodal foundation models, and structured decision-level fusion. The results show that reliable retrieval depends not only on powerful AI models, but also on how representations, alignment, and different types of evidence are combined across the system.
