Summary of thesis
Nickel-silicon (Ni-Si) alloys are recognized for their excellent corrosion resistance, high-temperature stability, and oxidation resistance, making them attractive for demanding applications in chemical processing, marine structures, energy, and aerospace systems. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the intrinsic brittleness associated with high silicon content, which complicates conventional manufacturing processes. This thesis investigates the design, production, and additive manufacturing (AM) of novel Ni-Si-based alloys using both Directed Energy Deposition (DED) and Laser Beam Powder Bed Fusion of Metals (PBF-LB/M), with the aim of overcoming these limitations through alloy composition tuning, advanced powder processing, and detailed characterization.
Printing trials confirmed the processability of Nickel-silicon alloys. The printed alloys also underwent preliminary testing of their mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. This thesis contributes significant scientific knowledge on microstructure-property-process relationships and establishes a platform for future integration of nickel silicides in functional AM components. The alloys developed are promising candidates for corrosion-resistant and thermally stable applications, particularly in situations where conventional manufacturing methods are inadequate.
