Summary of thesis

The proliferation of massive Internet of Things (IoT) devices in beyond-5G and 6G systems is placing unprecedented demands on cellular networks. Billions of energy-constrained, battery-powered devices are constantly competing for shared radio resources to send short, sporadic bursts of data to base stations.

Traditional cellular access methods scale poorly under this immense load. While newer techniques like Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) and Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) allow multiple devices to share the same frequency at the same time, they introduce heavy interference and high complexity.

To solve these challenges, Abhishek Kumar’s doctoral dissertation introduces a comprehensive set of mechanisms designed to make massive IoT networks scalable, low-latency, and highly energy-efficient.

The doctoral work was carried out at the Department of Information and Communication Technology, University of Agder (UiA) under the supervision of Professor Frank Y. Li. The research was conducted within the SOLID-B5G project, funded by the EEA Norway Grants, and has resulted in four peer-reviewed IEEE journal and conference publications.
