Show summary
Despite many commercial and academic approaches to simulate and predict battery operation, the complexity of software tools often limits their broad application. This work presents a novel physical domain library, called BattScape, that has been developed in Simscape from MathWorks® aiming at bridging the gap between experimentalists and simulation experts by providing a framework for user-friendly battery simulations. Our validation with an isothermal P2D Newman model with concentration dependent parameters in COMSOL Multiphysics® shows very good agreement for charge and discharge simulations of identical setups down to 0.4 mV average difference even at 5 C. Runtime benchmarking with COMSOL Multiphysics® shows increased computational costs of ∼130 s vs ∼10 s at runtimes below 3 min allowing to, e.g., create a drag-and-drop digital twin of experiments. To emphasize the useability and adoptability of the framework, three examples are provided: (A) a parameter adjustment of implemented elements to represent a perfect lithium counter electrode, (B) a novel combination of implemented elements to simulate a blended electrode, and (C) a simplified aging mechanism and how BattScape could be used as a digital twin to optimize battery operation control with changing parameters, for example to avoid lithium plating for an aging battery.
