In this chapter we examine how encounters with art can be practiced in schools through the research project “Skapende kunstmøter” [Encountering Art Through Making], a teacher-initiated collaboration between Høvåg school in Lillesand and University of Agder. The study follows 7th grade pupils through a three- week educational program involving analog photography, a visit to the Norwegian artist Mette Tronvoll’s exhibition “Tid” [Time] at Kunstsilo in Kristiansand, the stu- dents’ own photo exhibition, and a visit by the artist at school. Through qualitative analyses of student reflections, observations, and dialogues with artists, the study investigates how time functions as a resource in art-based education. Drawing on theories of resonance, subjectification, and events of subjectification, the research project demonstrates how extended, integrated encounters with art that involve artistic practice can enable depth and transformative experiences. The project high- lights the value of teacher involvement and argues that, in an accelerated society, the significance of encounters with art may lie in the opportunity for immersion and creation.

Undervisningen inspirerte studentene i deres utviklingsarbeid i praksis i barnehage.

Material Touch documents a performance lecture by the Stitch Sisters. The session was a sensory material entanglement of art with discussions on sustainability in the warp, weft and stitching of wool that wove and knitted words and being together, attempting to make sense of our future at a time of great urgency. A discussion followed the performance lecture.

This chapter presents a collaborative exhibition at the 2019 World Congress of the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA) at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Inhabiting/Living Practice presented the arts-based educational research of 18 doctoral students from around the world. We came together in the Hatch Gallery throughout the InSEA congress to collaborate, discuss, and make together. We shared our arts-based educational research through this emergent process while allowing it to evolve in relation to our ongoing dialogs, artistic interventions, and provocations. We imagined the gallery as a living body: an emerging embodied space that we inhabited for the week with material, affect, and relationality. In this chapter, through photograph documentation and examination of our experiences, we present the unfolding of this emergent exhibition. Through follow-up reflections, participants discuss how the exhibition allowed for a re-viewing of their doctoral research, a re-imagining of the possibilities of arts-based educational research, and the ways connections developed through making together over the course of the week. Through this work, we propose that more time spent making together is needed within the context of academic art education conferences.

In this article, the authors investigate making data with pupils in the kulturskole through the exploration of a performative paradigm. There seems to be a lack of knowledge concerning how the pupils see their place in and engagement with the kulturskole. When we started working with the pupils, a request emerged to not only observe and interview them, but also to hear their stories and understandings of being with the kulturskole. These processes are, throughout the article, described and understood as methodologically developmental when working with pupils. We attempt to bridge a qualitative approach into a post-qualitative performative thinking about making data. The article contributes explorations into what data can be and how to make data with pupils.

This article is linked to the UN sustainability goal 4, which deals with good education, and is aimed at early childhood teacher education in art subjects. We argue that good education in art can be developed by strengthening the aesthetic dimension. We therefore question how we, as art education teachers, can invite students to aesthetic experiences. By using aesthetic theory, we explain the aesthetic dimension as a form of sensory recognition that is acquired through breaking with the familiar and established forms. Aesthetics is linked to sensing physical surroundings, but also to how what we can sense comes into being in creative practice. The data material has been created together with a group of students who specialize in either drama, visual art, or music and attend the course Creativity and arts-based experimental development in kindergarten (KKK-200). Together with the students, we have explored movements with balls of textile yarn in outdoor and indoor spaces, and reflected over what the terms space, time, movement, and materials mean in art subjects. Our findings show that an exploratory approach to these concepts can provide a new understanding of how space and time are created in the educational situation. In this space-time creation, it is possible to disrupt habitual thinking and turn around habitual teaching methods, which can lead to perceiving the world in new ways. To break with the usual and keep the education open and unpredictable can be experienced as risky for both teachers and students. This risk provides the opportunity for students´ aesthetic experiences and can help them to understand the importance of the aesthetic dimension.

How do artists, art educators and researchers relate their practices to the urgencies of the world? How can art make a difference in a contemporary world dominated by complex and intense political, economic, and environmental challenges and conflicts? Are there right and wrong ways of addressing urgencies through art, research, and education? Should the arts in education be justified because of its usefulness for something else? This special issue provides insight into some responses to these questions. The contributions, ranging from short texts to longer texts, as well as artistic submissions, represent a richness and diversity that cover the fields of visual art, music, and theatre. They all relate to the questions in various ways by addressing how and why art matters, while exploring possible connections between art and societal challenges. This special issue originates from contributions from the international symposium titled ‘Arts in Action — Urgencies in Art and Art Education’ that was held in Kristiansand, Norway, from 8 to 10 June 2022.

: This chapter presents key characteristics of material-collective practice
as a pedagogical approach, and the potential this approach can have for art education. It challenges the Norwegian individually centered education policy with its
predefined and measurable competencies (KHV01-02). The proposed pedagogical
approach is derived from key findings in the recently published PhD dissertation
Material-Collective Practice – A Pedagogical Approach for Arts and Crafts Education
developed through the weaving project “Weaving through open doorways” (2021).
This empirical study consisted of micro ethnographic fieldwork during an outdoor
weaving project with twenty-two seventh-grade students and their teaching staff.
Material-collective practice as a pedagogical approach is inspired by contemporary
collective art practice and is characterized by the fact that (1) the teacher’s professional knowledge and teaching are of great importance, (2) the creative process with
unforeseen and unplanned events are emphasized, (3) creative work takes place
with materials, and space, time and movement are highlighted as tools, (4) and the
original and personal are not linked to the characteristics of an object, but rather to
the traces set in the creative practice. The relevance is directed at the curriculum’s
three interdisciplinary themes: public health and life skills, democracy and citizenship, and sustainable development.

Stitch Sisters invite to workshop and collective action in public space
The Stitch Sisters will transform knitting from a solitary textile technique for intimate, “itchy” garments into a collective monumental, “edgy” sculptural intervention in one of the common areas at the University of Agder (UiA). We invite participants to co-knit a circular form — a movement or “entanglement” in place, time, and material. By experimenting with knitting as a technique, our aim is to create a workshop that becomes both a commentary on and a dissent from conventional understandings of monumental artworks and women’s work in relation to place, time, and form, that is, as space/time/mattering (Barad, 2007).
We pose questions that concern not only craft within an educational context but also broader societal perspectives. The workshop becomes a collective activity that encourages reflection on the specific cultural and political agency of crafting and knitting in particular (Busch, 2022; Doolan, 2020; Mandell, 2019; Morris, 2016; Rourke & Wiget, 2016; Sará, 2025; Vicuña, 2022), as well as historical knitting actions such as the red caps in Norway during World War II and the red stockings of the 1970s women’s liberation movement (Redstockings, 1969).
Together, we will elevate a form of work that is often undervalued and invisible — “women’s work” in the form of knitting — moving it from the private sphere into both public and academic space.

In this workshop participants will be presented with and invited to take part in the art and research project Nomadic stitches by the materiality interest group in the Nordic network BLÆK. The members of the materiality group usually gather online to embroider, while they discuss text. The embroideries are then sent by mail between the participants, in order to continue working on each other's embroideries. Nomadic stitches is planned to be executed as chapters, of which chapter 1 is already performed, and hence in this workshop we will invite the participant to join us in chapter 2.
Theoretically, we take as our starting point anthropologist Tim Ingold's lineology (2010; 2015) and thinking about correspondence (2020) and draw lines to contemporary, guerrilla, traditional crafts and activist embroidery. Through embroidery as a material-collective practice (Klungland, 2021), we examine nomadic art as accounted for by Deleuze and Guattari with their discussions on the concepts smooth versus striated, abstract versus concrete, haptic versus optic and close-range vision versus long-distance vision (1987).
Time is a current concept. We read demanding text, do slow needlework and send by slow mail. We take our time. We find time. We explore our practice as a "close-range practice", a haptic space. A close practice where the stitches are sewn with needle and thread, while we dwell on difficult words. At the same time, it is a long-distance practice because of the distance between us and the long journey of the letters. We dwell on where the transition between smooth and striated space takes place. What is the smooth? What is the striated? The itches and edges for us are about the joy and resistance created in this slow, inefficient, seemingly useless art practice as a response to work pressures and expectations in our academic careers within early childhood teacher education.

Stitch Sisters. Time of material through wool.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
This Stitch Sister performance lecture will invite participants into a material-collective practice. We
will experience the “time of material” through wool - from its extraction from the living body of the
sheep and onward in the creative processes such as carding, felting and weaving into a textile
artefact. This rhizomatic and entangled performative event aims suggests the materialization of
textile as much as collectivity and connectedness between the participants.
Material-collective practice is a term for an art and craft practice that contains a specific
understanding of the material, the collective and subject existence. The materials are given a
significant role in the process of making, and both human beings and the material world, as well as
time and space are created in a collective practice. The theoretical framework includes agential
realism and intra-action (Barad, 2007), and the notion of rhizomatic connections (Deleuze and
Guattari, 1980).
This praxis is relevant for artist/teacher student/participant situations. We see the presentation
contributing to the theme of the conference by inviting its public to act with us and the materials.
We insist on art as an action that goes beyond linguistic/semiotic interpretations.

This study inquires into the potential of a material-collective practice as a pedagogical approach for a world-centred arts and crafts education. It challenges the Norwegian individually centred education policy with its predefined and measurable competencies. This monograph examines and discusses the possibilities when teacher attention shifts from the acquisition of skills and production of objects to the students' encounters with each other, materials and their surroundings. The study's emergent research method, material-collective ethnography, is proposed as a method for teaching practice. This empirical study consists of micro ethnographic fieldwork during an outdoor weaving project with twenty two seventh-grade students and their teaching staff. Students were invited to nearby woods where they were asked to take a ball of yarn and tie the end to something and start moving around. Within a few minutes, the place was transformed and a net emerged in the trees. Three action cameras were used to collect data material during the fieldwork. The cameras were attached to the chests of two volunteer students and the researcher herself. The films from these cameras became material for the description and analysis of the weaving project. The material-collective practice is launched as a term for an art and craft practice as a specific understanding of the material and the collective rooted and grounded in Karen Barad's agential realism. Barad, with her back in physics, argues that the material world is a co-creator of both man and human reality. The dissertation study is based on relational and performative art didactics and developed by emphasizing creative work with materials. The didactic approach is inspired by contemporary community-based art practices. In the analysis, the emphasis is placed on how the students' existence as a subject is made possible in encounters with social and material reality. The result of the study is the formulation of material-collective practice as a less individualistic and less anthropocentric educational practice. Materialcollective practice as a pedagogical approach is characterized by the fact that (1) the teacher's professional knowledge and teaching are of great importance, (2) creative work takes place with materials and space, time and movement are highlighted as tools, (3) the creative process with unforeseen and unplanned events are emphasized and (4) the original and personal are not linked to the characteristics of an object, but the traces set in creative practice. The pedagogical approach proposed through material-collective practice can contribute to overall goals, values and principles for education where there is an aim for the school to open their doors to the world and its future, promote democracy, help students to master their lives and participate in community fellowship. The relevance is directed at the curriculum's three interdisciplinary themes Public health and life skills, Democracy and citizenship and Sustainable development.
