Background and experience

I joined the University of Agder in 2025 and continue to hold a part-time associate professorship at the University of Gothenburg, where I have worked since 2020. Before that, I was a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Stirling in Scotland (2007–2020). I hold a PhD in biology from the University of Toronto and have held postdoctoral positions in Australia and Switzerland.

Areas of responsibility

  • Chair of PECNAT, the PhD Education Committee for Natural Sciences
  • Academic head of the PhD specialisation in Natural Sciences
  • Member of the Faculty Research Committee (Fakultetets forskningsutvalg, FU), Faculty of Engineering and Science

Teaching

I coordinate the following courses:

  • BIO113 Evolusjonsbiologi
  • BIO118N Evolusjonsbiologi (online)
  • BIO415 Study Design, Data Analysis, and Reproducible Science
  • BIO603 Statistics in Ecological Studies
  • BIO604 Advanced statistical methods in ecology, evolution and environmental sciences

I also contribute to teaching in:

  • BIO112 Introduksjon til biologien
  • BIO206 Generell økologi
  • BIO606 Introduction to Bayesian Analysis (PhD course, offered when there are enough students)

Research

I am an evolutionary biologist interested in how genetic variation persists in traits closely linked to survival and reproduction, despite the strong selection these traits often experience. My research examines how interactions between genes and environments shape variation in natural populations. I also apply evolutionary approaches to the sustainable control of agricultural insect pests, particularly the question of how resistance to biological control evolves.
