Background and experience
Khalid Durani is Associate Professor in Responsible Digitalization at the Department of Information Systems, University of Agder. He holds a PhD in Management (Information Systems) from the University of Innsbruck, where he remains affiliated as Principal Investigator of the FWF ESPRIT project Towards a Responsible Digital Future.
Research
Khalid's research examines the ethical implications of digital technologies, with an emphasis on digital responsibility. His work follows two connected streams. The first is how designers and developers handle ethical tensions when creating information systems. The second is how the use of digital technologies in organizations and society reshapes accountability and obligation. His projects range from consumer wearables and visual information on social media platforms to generative artificial intelligence in innovation teams. Methodologically, his work is primarily qualitative and theory-driven.
His research has been published in the Journal of the Association for Information Systems and the Information Systems Journal, and presented at leading international conferences including ICIS and ECIS. It has been recognized with the ACM SIGMIS Doctoral Dissertation Award, the DISC Award for Best Dissertation in Digitalization at the University of Innsbruck, and several best paper nominations. In 2025, he was selected by the Austrian Academy of Sciences to attend the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in Economic Sciences.
In service to the academic community, Khalid serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Information Systems Journal and has served as Associate Editor for WI 2026 and ICIS 2026. He reviews for journals including MIS Quarterly and the Journal of the Association for Information Systems, and received the Best Reviewer Award at ECIS 2023.
